I want to replace a doorframe that is old softwood painted white, with some new fancy looking hardwood pine. Another door in the house is done and the frame measures about 4 and 6/8" x 1 and 1/4".
I dont want to look like an idiot in a builders providers ordering the wrong thing, so what do I order? Is it hardwood pine 7 foot lengths I ask for? Planed?Maybe I should ask in mm cos I havent a clue of the imperial.
    Plaease help!:D

Firstly Pine is not a hard wood, though it is tougher than the white deal mostly used for door framing. Do ask for hardwood pine for a start.

Just ask for standard pine door framing, it will come in various lengths, though if you can get 7 foot lengths all the better as the longer lengths tend to have some sort of damage or distortion.

Be sure and select the door framing youself as most of the fellas in the yards of Heiton, Chadwicks, etc couldn't give a ***k and will give you any old crap.

The dimensions you gave are standard sizes though I'd say the width is probably 4 and 1/4. Door framing is already planed.

    Hey Martin
I went around the builders providers the other day with an offcut of the frame, but none of them stocked it, or knew exactly what it was. One fella said it was red deal pine. I was up in B+Q DIY store and they sell the stuff in an actual doorframe pack, but you've to buy the lot, I only need 6 1/2 foot of it. I rang a timber specialist and he said noone uses red deal pine and it hasnt been around since the 80's! Why do B n Q have it? I think I might be missing something here, like the type of timber it is! Do the measurements sound familiar to you? They are exact. 118mmx32mm. I will need to get a door to match them aswell!

...One fella said it was red deal pine...

There might be confusion with red deal as I never seen red pine deal? What exact is it deal or pine.

Do the measurements sound familiar to you? They are exact. 118mmx32mm.

The measurements are nearly standard 118mm is slightly larger than the standard door framing wih is 108mm by 32mm. You could rip off 10mm if required.

It is unusual if a timber merchant doesn't have it, though a good merchant should be able to find it. It appears this is going to cost you one way or another. I'd begin to consider any alternatives

Hey Martin, I'm confused about the term deal. According to most carpentry resources, deal is just a term to describe what section or how the timber has been cut from a tree. Red deal pine would be a deal cut from a type of pine tree, no? White deal being softwood pine? Anyway, I'm gonna go hunting for 'red deal' tomorrow! Thanks for the help.

    Hi,

I think you will the reason the big providers don't stock Red Deal is because the majority looked at the price not the quality of the timber they were buying.

I would be surprised if you can get an equal replacement for an old imperial measurement in any timber yard today without ordering first, it's been a while since I needed it but there were some timber yards who would plane the timber to size.

I expect B & Q have it in stock because their bulk buying power for the UK market was transferred to the Irish branch, one side of a door frame is a little unusual, how about replacing it all ?

Hey lads just to update I was talking to a carpenter today who I showed the offcut to and told me it was red deal and white deal glued together. What the? Ever heard of this?

While I have never heard of gluing red and white deal, at least its possible as opposed to the Red deal pine ?

Keep looking anyway. Bring a cutting to as many timber merchants as possible
