For those out there interested a European martial art, involving, it must be said, weapons....

Have a look at the work Neville Gawley is doing at the Limerick School of Arms: http://www.skynet.ie/~nvl/lsa/main.php. This is the only place in Ireland (and one of very few in Europe) where you can practice these arts as they were offered a century ago. There is also a page on CF in the current Irish Fighter, about two thirds editorial and one third a short piece by myself on the CF experience.

Mr. Gawley himself is very much of the view that this is a martial art and not simply the sport fencing seen in the Olympics. Nothing is taught here that would be out of place in a duel. Bouts, or "free assaults" take place but scoring is by the honourable admission of hits taken and not on the basis of lights and buttons.

Not much in the way of self defence here, unless you're planning a duel, but its great for timing and distance awareness (and both hard work and great fun).
