    Hi all,

So, what do you think of the new roundabout at the junction of Silchester Road and Glenageary Road? For those of you not familiar with it, it is of brick construction (not the tarmac pancake type).

It is also offset to one side of the road and as a result, the footpaths at the end of silchester road had to be altered to allow vechicles to swing left around the roundabout if going straight to the big roundabout at the former Deerhunter pub.

One near accident has been witnessed and buses have to do a bit of manouvering around it...but just think when the new twin axle Dublin Bus buses are put on the 45A route. This roundabout just takes the biscuit after the disaster junction at the top of Marine Road and Georges Street in Dun Laoghaire town.

Any other comments or experiences pls?

It has always been a mess, and this makes it worse. My missus was knocked down there a few years back, and was in hospital for a few days. There are far too many exits off it.

A very British solution to an Irish problem. Roundabouts should not be built at all IMO. They are a cheap option instead of putting in signalled junctions.

Think he's talking about the brand new (mini) roundabout half way up Glenageary Road lower.... Know what you mean about the one at the top though, there must be loads of accidents there.

As to this new one, why exactly did they feel the need to put this here in the first place?

I seriously couldnt believe it. If it was a painted, pancake one I would have been looking around for candid cameras. I nearly came off my bicycle going around it since I thought a car was close behind so was turning tightly.

Are you serious? Roundabouts are an excellent form of junction up to a certain volume of traffic. They have a much better record of keeping congestion down than an equivalent signalised junction. Why unearth do you think they've been adopted by so many countries: UK, France, Australia, Spain... etc. Many DoTs in the US are now giving an enthusiastic endorsement to the superior flow of traffic they allow for and have been installing them in recent road schemes.

They're also not the cheap option. The last time I heard figures mentioned a roundabout works out as more costly than a similar sized four way signalised junction. They're being installed because they are better not because they are cheaper. Statistics show they’re also safer – you can’t t-bone someone if you pull out into traffic on the roundabout.

Where the authorities have got it wrong in respect to roundabouts is using them when the volumes of traffic are too high, ie. the roundabout junctions over the M50. These should be free flowing with flyovers - as will now happen, to an extent.

Roundabouts have their limitations. They are more difficult to cross for pedestrians and cyclists (especially larger ones) and at a certain point traffic lights are capable of handling better peak flows.

This particular roundabout is an absolute disgrace. It is badly designed, so bad that Dublin Bus have had to divert the 111 as the 12metre single-deckers cannot negotiate it.

The worst thing is that there is no need for it, Silchester Rd has very low traffic on it, rarely is there any cars trying to exit or enter it, I have never seen any sort of queue at this junction.

It is very quiet - I use it frequently and have never seen a queue. Glenageary Road is extremely steep and I doubt it will be long before the first collision is recorded on the new brick wall roundabout.

Passed this roundabout this morning... looks like they have replaced the bricks with tarmacadam...
