PS2 probs

Got a pretty old ps2. picked it up 2nd hand after trading in my xbox so i dont know how old it is...but it has served me well so far (its original model, not slimline or silver)

Anyway, a problem has popped up with the more recent games.

The main problem is with loading up games. Whenever i pop in a recent game (We love katamari, shadow of collosus) it wont load the bloody game and goes to the browser/options menu. Its only after prodding it for about 10 minutes (blowing into it, unplugging it, restarting it, lightly shaking it) that it cops itself on and runs the game.

I got a bad feeling its linked to the newer games being more demanding, as when i pop in an old ps2 game, ala metal gear solid 2 (or even 3 for feck sake) it boots up first time without complaint.

Both katamari and collosus were brand new purchases.

the only other games with any similar problem is tekken 5

tekken 5 -it fails to load the story mode every time.

    and

Burnout Revenge -which suffers agonising long loading times and tends to fail alot of them.

These 2 though both have different problems and are both second hand So they might not be the console's fault.

Other than the games having scratches, it might be a dirty laser lens, something like that happened mine, I gave it a clean and it plays dvds again.

I think those games come on DVD9's and the PS2 is having trouble reading them, old PS2's have awful trouble with DVD9's but certainly not as bad as your case. Looks like your PS2 is on the blink and I suggest you get it sorted before it becomes irrepairable.
