just looking at a sony vaio FE11H for €1700 in Harvey Norman (€142 per month). this is the spec (except the one im looking at has the 256MB geforce go 7400 not the 128mb here):

    http://uk.insight.com/apps/productpresentation/index.php?product_id=SOYA04MKQ#extendedspecs

im buying it cause i'm moving away for 6 months and i can't take my own pc with me (even tho i'd love to :( )

what does everyone think of the Geforce Go 7400(256mb) ? i realise it won't keep up with desktop cards but should it run half life, far cry,f.e.a.r. etc at reasonable quality?

    cheers

Short answer: Yes. Long answer, yes but you'd want to see about getting dual core patches for games like Call of Duty 2 so that they'll take the processor on in an arena where it can really shine.

So long as you don't expect it to look like an Alienware running SLI it'll do you grand.

If you like low quality and low frame rates then yes it will do :-)

All in all its a turbo cache card: it won't be great in games but it will play the new ones on low and play all the old stuff well.

Not the worst gfx card in the world to be stuck with in a lappy.

    Have a look here.

As long as you dial down the detail to medium/low settings and keep it around 1024x768 or lower resolution wise it should be able to handle some of the current games of course some are more eye candy heavy than others e.g. F.E.A.R so you may have to make further concessions to the details levels & resolution to get it playable. Though Half Life 2 should run fairly okay on it and so might Farcry at around 800x600 just don't expect to be using the max details mode.

You could go even further and force a lower quality mode in the NV driver control panel (by default it is set to high) though this may affect image quality significantly.

The Go 7400 does use a mix of it's own RAM and Turbocache were it accesses system RAM via the PCI-E bus.

If you don't want to sacrifice image quality then you will need something at least in the mid-range like a Mobility X1600 or Go 7600/6600.

It should be fine with pretty much anything.
Only the latest games (with every detail turned up way further than your monitor can even display) will cause any slowdowns or glitches.

cheers everyone, think i'll be going with it. I don't need games to look like Alienware SLi monsters at all. its only really going to be used heavily for gaming for 6 months then i'll be home and my own machine can handle everything comfortably. Its just hard to know really with the mobile gfx cards how well they'll operate espec when working with the dual core chips.

    thanks for the help

    €1700 seems a bit expensive:confused:

Surely you could get a much better laptop than that for the same money, Sony charge a big premium for the name.

Acer have a great laptop for €1400 i think its the Acer Aspire 5020

    Turion64 1.8ghz
    1 gig DDR 333
    Radeon X700 mobility

Its a much better buy, and the X700 is somewhere between a 6600 and a 6600gt, so it will handle games nicely;)
