Amp from bits.

Right just wondering if it's possible to build a guitar amp from a 19" rack amp and say... 1 or 2 mountable speakers or is this just some analogue electrical minefield. Would a decent quality rack amp make much difference or would it be unsuitable for a guitar?

    Your knowledgable input much appreciated...

I was thinking of the possibilities with a rack amp with a decent EQ (not just the three frequency ranges). would the range of the eq just be wasted on guitar alone?

I know about matching amp and speaker ratings as I done so in manys the car in my previous job (as terrible as that was). but would a rack amp handle weak guitar signal?

It's just that I was thinking of building a custom amp and how feasable that would be.

I don't think the EQ would be wasted on a guitar at all.

Now, you've got some form of Rackmount amp, so I'm going to jump ahead and assume it's a pre-amp. If so you'll need to get a rackmount power-amp, and just stick it all in a rack, and combine it with a decent speaker cabinet.

That is, assuming that's what you've got already. So you'll just have to give us some more details.

TBH I dont even have the pre-amp yet (Guessing most Rackmount EQ's are just pre-amps from what you said). This I was not aware of. I was also gona build the speaker cabinets myself so I could mount the speakers amp etc, as I wanted and cover them the way I wanted.

would I need to buy two seperate units then (i.e.power amp and EQ)? surely there's rack mount power amps with built-in EQ's?

If you have a power amp, then you could add maybe a Behringer Vamp pro or POD or Vox tonelab to use as a preamp. A dry guitar into a power amp will sound very dead without a preamp.

Are you talking about building the rackmount equipment into the same housing as the speaker(s)? Make a combo, as it were?

I think you'll really need to tell us just what kind of amp exactly it is you have already though.

Thats the Idea yeah. Wana fiddle about with the design too... ordinary's just not where it's at, I like bells and whistles!

ATM I just have a lil' 25w Crate practice amp. Was looking at branching out into something more stage friendly and hella more versatile. I'd like an amp that sound not good but great. If an onboard EQ will help do that then why not.
