Ok, when I try to surf the net, it stalls usually and doesn't load the page, but I know I'm connected since I'm able to play online games and so on and use irc. BUT, when I'm running a virus scan(AVG), pages load up perfectly... I'm using a router to connect to the internet.. I'm rather baffled, anyone come across this before?

I'm making the assumption that you are using Win XP.

So try the following in a dos prompt:

    1) ipconfig /flushdns

    2) net sh int ip reset reset.log

    3) ping google.ie

Let me know what happens with the ping?

    Also,

Try to use a different browser if you have one.

    Firefox
    IE
    Opera
