Almost blinded.....by cola

Yesterday, I put a bottle of Pepsi Max in the freezer for a modest fifteen minutes....took it out after said time to pour myself a glass, bottle was nice and cool, but not frozen. Opened it, turned my head to talk to my girlfriend, and the second I turned back...

Massive explosion, knocked me to the floor, glasses went flying across the room, and I couldn't actually see at all, thought I was blinded. Girlfriend came in to a rather strange setup, me lying on the floor clutching my face, surrounded by a pool of Pepsi...

Luckily I regained my vision after about twenty seconds, but my eyes were killing me for the rest of the night, worries me thinking about what might have happened had I not been wearing glasses - and I normally don't wear them!

Also, there was no ice in the bottle at all, yet my face was cut in several places....small cuts they may have been, but they bled! "What happened your face?" "Oh, that - Pepsi exploded in my face, the usual..."

So kids, be careful when opening those bottles of coke.....you might end up disabled for life. :D

Kind of funny but there is a real danger with fizzy drinks that have a larger capacity than 2 litters. People have actually lost their eye from lids being driven by the force.

I think it is something to do with the pressure, like how a pressure cooker causes water to boil at a higher temp. I think liquids under pressure can be liquid while actually below their freezing point. I had something less dramatic happen with coke a few time, open a liquid 2 litre and it freezes instantly. I find it happens more with beer, maybe because I drink more beer! or maybe because the alcohol lowers the freezing point.

Sometimes I have saved beers that probably would have frozen up on me. I took them out, they are fully liquid, leave them out though and they are covered in thick frosty ice in a few minutes. Lucky I saved them, would have been like loosing a child...

This reminds me when I was in first or second year of secondary school a mate of mine was getting a can of coke out of his locker. Something happened that the can got shook, I probably done it (who knows) anyway said mate gets can and places it on top of the lockers and just proceeds to take the rest of his lunch out of the locker, when all of a sudden there's a bang, the can explode's in s***, fecking funny all I can remember is coke everywhere and no can to be seen anywhere. Fecking lucky no one got hit with any of the shrapnel at the time.

You should have read the label!
I noticed a warning on a 7up bottle stat went along the lines of "Warning: contains pressurised gas. Exercise caution when opening"
I though it was funny at the time.

and its listed on this site for dumb warnings

me thinks u should sue if there wasnt a warning like the yanks
[/SIZE]In 1985, 80-year-old Mae Roberts was legally blinded in her left eye when a twist-off aluminum cap blew off a plastic two-liter Diet 7-Up bottle and struck her in the eye. Lawsuit documents revealed that the company knew of the problem of exploding bottle caps and of numerous resulting eye injuries yet failed to act. As a result of lawsuits, the company converted over to the plastic pre-formed caps that greatly reduced the likelihood of caps blowing off and added a specific warning on the bottles.

Being serious, I probably would have been actually blinded permenantly had I not got my glasses on....usually I would be very careful about opening frozen bottles of any kind due to the obvious issue of pressure and expansion but this has only been in for fifteen minutes so I assumed it would be grand!

Ah well. After my ordeal I happily drank a pint of the offending stuff that very night....:D

Yeah it already happened to me!
Also, never put water alone in a microwave! It might explode when you take it if it stayed too long. I'm serious, don't try.

Why would you put it in the freezer in the first place?

I was thinking this - what's wrong with a fridge?

I was thinking this - what's wrong with a fridge?

Makes it colder quicker as you might expect - I only had the 15 minutes to chill it before drinking it and as it was bought off the shelf I wanted it to be nice and cold :)

Why would you put it in the freezer in the first place?

Simply to have it cold more quickly. You've never done that!

I won't ask, but this makes it sound like you were in some sort of very-cold-Pepsi-drinking-competition and only got your bottle with fifteen minutes to spare...

I assume he had to go out or something.
I would have bought a drink from teh cooled section.
No, I have never done it dédé.
I would use ice if I only had fifteen minutes before the competition. ;)

Haha, nope, just got home later then expected and was running short on time before I had to do something else.....and I absolutely hate drinking non-chilled soft drinks!

And the reason it was from the shelf and not from the shops fridge is that their 2Ltr bottles were on special offer at 99c.....how could I resist!!

    ROFL :D

Reminds me of that Simpsons episode, where Homer goes into the coma after Bart puts the can of beer into the paint mixer.

    "April Foo--" THOOOOOOMM!
