I didn't really know where to place this question.
Basically my Dad used to make home made wine.
Sadly he passed away recently. He has several batches of wine on
the go and rather than throw this away we would like to see it used.
It is already stored in demi johns but we haven't much of a clue what needs to be done.

Does anyone know anyone that has an interest in wine making local to Cork area or have any suggestion as to where I could post this question / look up details on wine making

    Thanks

Laneyh, this is the right board for such questions.

However it looks like most of our home brewers are beer people, not wine people.

If this is something you dad used to have a passion for, I think it's lovely that you want to continue it on.

The most relevant things about home brewing really are ingredients and dates - e.g. what's in it, and when was it laid down.

Just plain googling will lead you to many, many resources on winemaking. Additionally, there's homebrewing sites linkied through this board for beer brewing and I'm sure the same sites/stores also address home brewed wine.

Did you dad keep any records of what he's got on the go? A notebook, markings on the demjohns, anything like that? Or is it all a bit like the top secret brewings of an experimental laboratory?

    Hi Laneyh,

As stated, a Google search will find a lot of useful links e.g. http://www.homewinemaking.co.uk/basic_method1.html

The techniques for brewing beer and wine are quite similar and shops that sell kits/ingredients for beer normally stock wine kits as well. Check out the 'How to Homebrew' sticky on this site for links of suppliers in Ireland.

If the wine is already in the demijohns the first part of the job is done so it sounds like the bottling will come next. Depending on how long it's been there it may need more time to settle and you may decide to use finings to help it clear.
