Location of 'loose change' machines in Dublin

Anyone know of any stores that have these machines that take loose coins and spit out a receipt which you then change for the amount you put in less surcharge?

I saw them on RTE news months ago but have never seen one.

Better than going to bank, getting coin bags, counting out coins, seperating them and then back to the bank.

they have one in the Centra in drumcondra, i think the running commission is 9.5%.


my scouts recently made over 4000 euro bagpacking two weekends ago and it took me and another leader just under an Hour bag and count it. save your money, just count it yourself...

Spar, Clarehall, Malahide Road, Dublin (5/13???) but near Darndale

Supervalue in raheny also has one, they are charging around 9% as well.

Can't say I've ever seen a Spar down the Clarehall end of the malahide road. Where is it in relation to Clarehall SC?

spar on the tonlegee road has one. its just off the malahide road, opposite side of the malahide road to cadburys

yeah spar in clarehall has one too. if you take a turn beside the tesco's and the gym on the malahide road you come to a roundabout...its in there

btw: i work in the tonlegee road spar.

note: just to let you know the machine charges a 9.5% or maybe 9.75% service charge! its not that much, pretty damn handy machine. i use it all the time:)

Just to let people know so they don't start screaming "rip off Ireland".

The banks charge the buisnesses commision on change now so 9.5% doesn't go to the store direct as they probably pay commission themselves/

I was just going to say that some supermarket should do just that. Nothing wrong with vouchers since it is the place I shop in anyway. 9.5% is crazy money. I'd sooner let a kid I know count it and keep the 9.5%. Most people going to these are going to have over €100 otherwise they would count it themselves.

I remember mcdonald used to give you a free burger for every £5 in change years back, superquinn used to give free donuts. That was in the 80's and I think the central bank refused to give them change or charged for it.

You get a voucher that you can ONLY use in Tesco, and it must be used ALL AT ONCE. You do NOT get any change from it.

Used all at once? so if I put in €200 in change I get a single voucher for €200 that must be used in one go? doesnt sound right.

Do you just dump in a load of change or do you have to separate the coins into €2 & 50cent etc.

Somebody mentioned trocaire boxes, you may be shocked at how much change you have, my mate counted his from a bowel in his room, it was over €700, got a nice holiday out of it.

I tried the one in Centra Drumcondra this morning, you just dump the coins into a tray and shove them down a chute, machine counts it up then issues a receipt with total count of coins (ie, 1cent x 400, 2cent x 345 etc)
9.5% commission deducted but bloody handy (I spent ages in three different bank branches queuing for plastic coin bags and gave up...don't have the time to qujeue:eek: so I accept the charge levied for the convenience of the coinexpress machine)

Your friend would have payed nearly €70 commission on his bowel dosh though...aaarggghhhh!

now, THAT'S a scandal. Legal tender is legal tender, no matter what form. Can you go into the Central Bank and change it commission-free?

Individuals wouldn't be charged by a bank, but you can't expect banks not to charge a company for changing large sacks of coins. Also, the commision presumably covers the cost of the machine itself.

Yep, albeit a big bowl. I have a big pot myself, I just dump all my change in it. The €2 coins really mount up, my brother got over €200 from a amount that looked like €40 to me.

Personally, the thought of counting the cash and bagging it, gives me nightmares.

The commision should have an upper limit. If somebody goes in with €2000 in coins they take almost €200. Like banks changing currency they have a minimum charge or %, this could have a min charge, % and an upper limit.

The supermarkets are stupid for not having this in all shops and spitting out vouchers for the shops. What can such a machine cost? they would have loads of business from it as a result.

I work for a Major bank, and we have a change counting machine which spits out the receipt which you can then lodge straight into your account..

None of this paying commission lark for me

There's one in the Centra in Ranelagh tucked in to the left of the counters. Its just around the corner from the LUAS as well. Damn handy, went in there with a tupperware container before, expecting maybe 20, and came out with 80 :cool: They're a bloody godsend when you're strapped for cash and go sofa diving.
