    THey are very nice, although many of them re not as secluded or quiet as they used to be, back ten years or so ago, and some or in fact very loud and ibiza like so watch out for them, crete itslef is a marvelous location however;

    Went to Crete a few summers ago for a week.

    Was in Hersonissos which was lively, a good place for a lad's holiday, but a bad place for a relaxing break. Island was nice enough, depends what kind of holiday you're after I suppose.

    Been to Crete, several times. Back to Malia in May. Always enjoyed myself! Two of my trips were cycle touring hols.(tough going, at times!). My preference was for Chania, at the western end of the island, and Sitia, at the other end. If you are on a package hol., chances are, you will be in Hersonnisos/Malia/Agios Nikolas. The island is big enough to make a 2/3 day trip to Chania/Sitia a possibility. Another option is to take a ferry up to Santorini. Rent a car to get about easily. If that's not possible, use public transport(buses).

    Hope the above, helps!

    went to crete a few years ago, stayed in stalis, it was a quiet enough place but really beautiful. It was only a 10 min taxi ride away from Hersonissos too, so you get the best of the quiet life and also the lively atmosphere there.. really nice place, and all the people were really friendly to us....

    Flew into Athens last June, headed straight to Naxos... spent a few days pottering around on the beach... rented bikes and cycled to the centre of the island which was full of rocks and funny little lizards. Got lost down some backroads in the midst of absolutely no where, .. took a "short cut" across a field /ditch... ended up back on some minor horse path. Agh the memories. Was great!

    Check out Mykonos and that other rocky island, Delos... its tiny but got loads of mad statues.

    Been to Crete a couple of times, absolutely love the place, will be back again hopefully next year, would agree with the Stalis thing, close enough to the mayhem in Hersonissos (which is somewhere you at times need to keep your wits about you - like any busy nightlife area anywhere in the world).......
    I definitely noticed a difference in the times I was there, and yeah there's definitely a bit of that Ibiza buzz going on on some of the Islands, but Crete is a great place to explore, there's pleny of places to look around, Agos Nicolas is nice (I don't drive, and found the busses fince for getting around) and also Knossos is well worth a visit.....

    on both occasions found the pace of life there just great, and I think you can do both a mad holiday and a quiet relaxing holiday......

    it doesn't bother me but Malia can definitely be an intimidating place (as can Hersonissos) it can attract a lot of English heads, lads just staring around looking for hassle, showing off the Bulldog on their arms, but as with anything it's easy to avoid them too......

    The food is great, certainly some of the most amazing bread you'll ever taste....
