    *** 17.03.06 THE BEAT / The Upgrades, Voodoo, 8pm, 20.00euro

Saint Patricks Day Friday 17th of march

In 1979, The Beat, a ska-revival band from Birmingham, England, moved down the countryside to London, changed their name to the English Beat, signed to indie label 2-Tone, released a pop version of Smokey Robinson's classic "Tears of a Clown," and hit it big in the UK. Within the year, the English Beat, signed with IRS Records and released their debut LP, I Just Can't Stop It. Their second release on the label, Wha'ppen? saw the band take a more political stance with such tracks as "Stand Down Margaret," an anti-Thatcher tune. The general public found the more poppy-first album more appealing and the band refined their style with their third release, Special Beat Service. This album saw the band moving away from their traditional early ska toward a more African/Latin rhythmic flare. The band won worldwide notoriety after their video was sprayed across America via MTV, but broke up in 1982. From this split, however, grew General Public and Fine Young Cannibals, two bands that would become favorites in both the US and England.

€15 is a ****in joke for relatively unkown bands, considering Leechrum was €25 a weeekend of it.
