What kind of guitar is this?

Being extremely bored of late I decided to pick up an old guitar that has been lying around the house for about ten or fifteen years. It's in perfect condition (except for a being covered in dust!).
I know sweet damn all about guitars so forgive me my undeniable ignorance. It's a six string with 18 frets is all I know but the last three strings are made of different material to the first three (kind of plasticy).
I am thinking of learning to play the thing properly but I want to know if this guitar is OK or not?
Also, what is the best self-teaching course on sale out there? I'm talking about a video/DVD + book type thing. I looked at this site http://www.jamorama.com/ that has something like that available for download but I don't have regular access to broadband so that might be a bit of a problem.
I know you will probably say I should go for lessons but I think I would have to learn one-on-one and that is a bit too expensive for me.
    Thanks for any replies.

if it does then it is a classical guitar, its a good guitar to learn on but since you seem to have no idea about guitars it is recommended that you do go to lessons after looking up some basics abut guitars... you will rarely find a good lesson online

a dvd/book might be some help tho you should check it out get a computer cd rom or something...

i pity people who are trying to start learning guitar these days due to the absence of tabs as you'll be stuck learning the crappy songs the make you learn in guitar books like oranges and lemons or some **** like that. previously i always urged people to learn the basic skills of tab reading and learn the songs they like because youre more determined but o well we've been raped by stupid copyrighting again...

    god luck in learning btw

    Sven

Yeah,it looks like that. I'll see about getting lessons but I still want to know if there is any dvd/book that someone has used and found helpful.
Any replies would be appreciated. Thanks for yours though Sven.

step one. go to www.ibreathmusic.com. Learn the fingerings for the chords CAGED. When you can play them...

Step two. Go to a music shop in town, opus for instance just by grafton st, buy a few tabs books (expensive, 20-30 each) and start learning your favourite songs. Start with stuff like Bob Dylan etc if you're a fan.

There you go, that's your first lesson, see ya in about 2 months for your next lesson:o
