Keeper's effect on strikers

What sort of effect do you think the rep of keepers have on strikers?

I was watching the United Newcastle game, and Rooney Saha and Van Nist made lots of wrong choices in one on ones.

In lots of situations, where a chip would have been an easy goal, and it's what they would do against nearly every keeper out there, they try to place it on the outside of him.
Ruud just did it there in about the 83rd minute, and I think everybody in the world thought he was gona nick it over him, but he tried to place it. Thought it was weird.

Do you think this is to do with Given's rep as a shot stopper, effects their decesion?

Well I always teach my Under 13 team to work the keeper rather than trying to go for the unstopable finish. United strikers haven't been doing that too well today but maybe its more because they are 2 nil up rather than Given been in goal??

i think it was more down to poor finishing than anything else, dont get me wrong, i hope given will take over from van der sar in the long run at united, but 3 chances in particular, rooney off the post, van nist 1 on 1 and saha chance, all should have been buried, no matter who is in goals. given made 3 decent saves, but he would have been disappointed if they had beaten him

Yeh, but what I mean is they weren't buried because they made the wrong choice, something they very rarely do.
Do you think Given has an effect on their decesion making, cause they know he is more likely to save a chip than most

I remembered that thing Kiely does before penalties when I saw this thread. He jumps up and shakes the crossbar as the taker makes his run up. Its very effective, I think he even saved a Shearer penalty (or maybe it went wide).

    Just a little contribution.

I think it has more effect in a penalty type scenario where the striker has time to think about the quality (or otherwise) of the keeper in question. On a one on one situation, the striker goes on instinct.

Yeah, unless it's a peno (or maybe even a free kick) where the player has to stop and think, then I think yes, the keeper can put players off and force wrong decision...but in the pace of a match, or being put clean through 1 on 1 with the keeper, you alredy know what you're going to do, it's up to the keeper to read the striker rather than the striker read the keeper imo...

I think that most strikers, especially at that level, work by instinct alone. Although having said that, having Peter Schmeichel rushing out on you would cause anyone to scuff a shot.
