really? I didn't think there was actually an ''album'' version, everyone i hear is the same.. I can *just* play it, although i haven't actually even played a note of it in about a year, so i guess i can't play any off it at this stage..heh heh

Personally? No. That is the aural equivalent of hollywood blockbuster movies, all flash and no substance.

I hope you're not implying Steve Vai has no "substance"

I'm not implying, I'm stating it. That man leaves me colder than a big vat of liquid nitrogen. Yes he's technically very good but never have I listened to his music and felt it was anything more than cock stroking. There's no substance, no passion and no emotion.

Steve Vai sucks balls, his passion and warfare album had no passion at all, and only a bit of warfare. Those stupid pointy guitars he plays suck as well, whod want 24 frets, all those high squeeky notes give me a headache. All music after august 25th 1958 sucks. All the good musicians are dead anyway. I'll get my cardigan...

    Viva le powerchord!

Did anyone else think that Ralph Macchio looked kinda like a young Stevie Ray Vaughn?

    Ach! It was a gag.

    [RANT]

I'm beginning to think that a rule stating that claiming a musician "sucks" without being able to do better and prove it should carry some sort of penalty might not be such a bad iea. These "X sucks" threads are ****ing pointless exercises in ignorance.

If you don't like it, fine, but every musician I've ever seen mentioned on Boards has gotten somewhere far in enough in their career as a result of being better than any of us in their specific area. From Meg White to Steve Vai, from Cliff Williams to Paganini, each has their own style, their own way of playing their music. Nobody will "get" it all.

When you hear Clapton play guitar, you know it's Clapton. Same goes for Vai. Despite the many clones there will only ever be one Jaco, one Billy Sheehan, one Geezer Butler. Marty Friedman is the first Marty Friedman.Their personality shines through in their playing which is what sets them apart from the countless other bedroom and beyond players. These people have had the drive and the imagination to follow their own path and be "the first..." rather than "the next...". That's a huge achievement IMO. Whether you appreciate what they do is a personal thing which is the fundamental beauty of music as I see it, everybody gets something different out of it, but I just grow weary of this constant bitchfest about this guy sucks and that guy sucks. If their playing does nothing for you, that's absolutley cool, but the notoriety that fuelled you hearing them in the first place means that they do move other people. In the same way, hearing something speical in something that leaves somebody else cold shouldn't be a source of amazement from either party. There is a wide enough audience and appreciation of so many styles of music that there is enough room out there for pointless shredding to one-note blues to co-exist and have meaning for many, many people, sometimes in a mutually inclusive way. As a musician the best thing I ever learned is that I can learn something new and good from everybody. I would make a point of seeing why a player plays like they do and why they what they play. The day you think you can't learn something from even the most basic of players is the day you've lost touch with reality and in a similar way even the most basic of players can pick up something from a technical player and interpret it in their own way. Being a good musician is, IMO, about finding your balance between technique and musicality and blending it with your personality to create something new.

    [/RANT]

*Note - this is not aimed at anybody in particular, nor even at this board, just venting at the amount of "sucks" nonsense I've seen over various forums recently. Walk the walk if you're going to talk the talk ;)

Right, **** this. The next person to even attempt to start a "x sucks, y is better" thread or direct a thread in that direction gets a ban, the length of which is up to myself or Doctor J.

This thread has run it's course.
