    Amazing.

Fortunately for me, I come from the BB King School of Make One Note Tell a Thousand Stories. :D

Sure wish I didn't have to work a day job, though.

Holy wow. That's a pretty impressive technique. Funny how I've never heard of him. Is he still kicking around?

    That shred thing was disgusting..

Jonas Hellborg is good. Billy Sheehan is very crap. He just palys the bass like a guitar except slower.

We must remember there is a vast canyon-shaped difference between being technically good and musically good.

Deadly serious. Post that on the jazz forum and they'll laugh at him. He hides behind distortion and crappy fast runs - he's not even playing it like a bass - it's like a guitar player trying to play a bass. I have a "Niacin" DVD where Sheehan plays with Dennis Chambers in Japan, and he can't even play the start of Birdland (Weather Report song) without totally messing it up - and that's a fact - a pathetic effort from Sheehan which shows him up for the phony he is IMO. The intro isn't even that difficult, but he's out of his league trying to play Jaco, and misses all of the artificial harmonics.
Again - I can understand how laypeople can be fooled - some people even think Clapton is a great guitar player...

That Jonas Hellborg guy is great though - reminds me of Victor Wooten. At least we're headed in the right direction with Jonas, but Sheehan is a farce....

What has that got to do with anything? He never claimed to be better. What an irrelevant statement....

Don't even bother trying to argue over this - you'll never convince me otherwise - Clapton is a joke. A one-trick pony, with predictable blues licks - and that's MY OPINION, so let's drop it. Discussing Clapton bores me even more than his music, so let's leave it at that and move on...

    Anyway, back on topic...

Oh goody, a this-musician-is-better-than-that-musician thread, these are never tedious, pointless or irrelevant and never descend into flamfests where folks get the ban whack

I'll tell you what I see in the Sheehan video: a guy putting on a show for a crowd who came to see some shred. In that sense, you can't fault the guy. He is a kick ass rock bass player and an excellent showman and he does what he does very well indeed. For a while, I thought he was trying to play a musical interpretation of Michaelangelo's David but then I remembered he was trying to entertain some folks ;)

Different people get different things from music and musicians, everone has an opinion but I have to say, dismissing someone as a joke is pretty ignorant. You may not enjoy someone's work, you may find their playing tiresome but every musician does things their own way and that's what keeps it interesting. Accept them for what they do and who they are. Music is ****ing wonderful, though I don't like a lot of what goes on I'd never pretend to get it all, and I'd never change that. There are people who are technically garbage but can entertain in regal style and there are people who are technically stupendous but woefully boring to all but a select few. Neither is better than the other and neither is irrelevant, it's just down to how you connect with their music and what they're trying to get across. It's all music, it's art, it's not a feckin competition.

Good point - but that Sheehan clip was posted to wow people in this thread - if he was there to entertain a crowd who wanted to see shredding, then he did his job fine, but that's not why it was posted here.
Also - I did see him mess up a Jaco riff on a "Niacin" DVD, and that's why I called him a joke - he got in over his head, and couldn't deliver - i.e. I've seen his limits, and all he can do is **** really fast on a fretboard while hiding behind distortion - I just don't feel it...

So on a one-off appearance you write him off as a farce? Ehhhh... ok.

Not everyone can play like Jaco and, thankfully, not everyone tries to play like Jaco (though there are enough out there to make the baby jesus cry). Billy does what he does, his speed and accuracy in that video are impressive, beyond the capabilities of most people who will pick up a bass, even if it isn't going to redefine art. He's a bass player who specialises in playing rock, not jazz, and I don't think that's any reason to dismiss what he does. He did, in my opinion, a bang up job on Eat 'Em And Smile and maybe a jazz player wouldn't have nailed it quite so well. Besides, I never saw Jaco tap like that... or use a drill ;)

No, not just that DVD. I've also seen him do some solo stuff as an "extra feature" on a Victor Wooten & Carter Beauford DVD, and it was the same repetitive ****.

Either way, I'm not into it at all. But I also have no doubt that Victor Wooten could play the exact same stuff just as well...if he was arsed practicing his scales live at a gig.

I'm big into rock music though, so it's not that I don't like the rock aspect and prefer jazz, but I like stuff that has soul - GNR, Faith No More, Greg Howe (Extraction Album, ahem, Doctor J), Zappa, Primus, RATM, Soundgarden. Sheehan does nothing for me musically. It's just bland runs with no feeling IMO. Speed is sooooo not everything.

Fook off, please. I'm entitled to give my opinion. I agree with Hungus that the first guy is amazing, but I don't like Sheehan - and I always said "IMO" in my posts - so what's the problem? You expect everyone to automatically just jack-off over some fast bland fret runs? Well maybe it's not to EVERYONE'S taste - maybe people have different OPINIONS! Strange concept, eh?

Re: Clapton's 'tired cliche' licks - 40 years ago he invented most of them and helped get a generation of young folks playing guitar.

I defy anyone to say that his work with The Cream wasn't soulful, fast, and topnotch for the time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Man, I'm definetly not getting into a bass-player pissing contest here, and the Doc has pretty much said it all, I love what Jonas Hellborg did in the video I posted, and I love what Billy Sheehan did, and of course, Victor Wooten's stuff. They're all just quite different players.
