Do you actually have Sun Java installed? You could be running the older Microsoft virtual machine Java runtime.. not supported any more but needed for some internet banking.

Did you install Firefox in the default location as the flash installer last time I tried does not know where Firefox actually is and just dumps the files into the normal location where they usually are.

Download this flash installer, run it and then check your C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins or the directory to see if the flash plug-ins are present.

Also you don't have an extension like Adblock installed that is configured to block flash objects in web page do you ?

I was having the exact same problem...then I turned off adblock, d/led the flash plug in again and stuff started running again. Turned adblock back on and everything's sweet. I think it might have had something to do with when FF updated itself to the latest version.

I've found adblock to be as much trouble as the stuff it blocks tbh

I found as well if you install flash player or other plugins and theres an older version or traces of in your profile (application data) this can cause problems. All you do is remove the version from the plugin folder in application data and a fresh install is needed. If that doesnt work its probably something like adblock or no script blocking your java. Or it could be the browser itself.
tools -> options -> web features and check that enable java and javascript are ticked.

Use Adblock plus and just add flash objects .swf to your whitelist so it wont block those elements (older versions of Adblock do not have this feature). By default Adblock shouldn't block flash anyway unless you have set it to do so or are using a filterlist from someone else e.g. G's filtersets.

    whitelist filter for flash files
    @.swf
