XP Pro USB mass storage device.

I recently installed XP pro. I had been using home edition.

My Pc recognises usb devices, mouse, mp3 player etc. It won't recognise a usb mass storage device though. When I plug it in, it searches for a drive but doesn't find one. It shows up in the device manager with a ? then.

I had no problems with home edition recognising this.

It was a fresh install of pro, slipstreamed with service pack 2.

I have tried entering both the home and pro edition into the cd drive to see if it would pick it up a driver.

    Any suggestions

If you open Computer Management in Administrative Tools, does the drive show up in the Disk Management section? If you can see it there, right click on the name of the disk and see if there are any options to re-enable the drive and set a drive letter.

I've seen a similar problem before on a few ocasions when moving an external hard disk from one XP Pro PC to another.

    Thanks for the reply

No it is not showing in the disk managment.

What happens is, I connect the device, the found new hardware wizzard starts, seraches for a driver and dosen't find one.

In device manager it shows up as 'zen sleek (ums)' with a yellow exclaimation mark.

I googled the problem and other people seem to have the same issue with pro. Unfortunatly I can't find a solution

Have you tried re-installing Creatives software or updating the firmware of the device to the latest version ?

Tried that, no joy. This is starting to piss me off. The Zen itself works grand, its just when I use it as a drive it won't recognise it. It works with the other PC in the house so it must be windows,

Might be worth a shot but their are several updates to WMP10 (as from what I gather it is tied to this app to transfer files) that might be worth installing some of which are not in the critical section you must get them in the other updates.

Or do it manually in this order and reboot after installing each patch.
    patch 1
    patch 2
    patch 3

If you check the about in WMP10 you will see that build should be 3990 which is the latest.

Also isnt their like a reset you can force on the player or something that will restore it to its out of the box settings...

The again it sounds like a software issue with the PC if it works with the other one.

I've tried installing the usb drivers on the abit site, but no joy. Has anyone else had this problem?

Did you try asking over at Creatives own forums you might find someone who can address your problem.

Tried that just now, I'll see how I get on.

It's a problem with my installation of windows though, as the player works fine as a drive with other computers.

when i google "xp usb mass storage driver not found" I have found a lot of posts regarding this but no solution, there seems to be one on expert sexchange, but you need to subscribe to view it.

    Callan,
For the Zen Sleek to show as a Hard drive on any PC you need to upgrade the player to PlaysForSure™ functionality.

Use the following link to upgrade.

The player has been upgraded to that firmware. It worked as a USB drive on the PC, with home edition, when it had the original firmware.

The problem is not the player but windows. The player works fine, it's when i swicth to the portable hard-drive option it won't recognise it. Windows dosen't find a driver.

OK, that is a problem so.

The only thing i can think of is to load service pack 2 and insure all windows are updated. I'm sure you have done this all ready. When windows is looking for a driver you could direct it to the CD (If you still have the Windows disk)

    Otherwise I'm not sure.

Its a common problem with Win XP Pro, and depends on your hardware as well.

I think its related to the power supply/voltage levels from the USB hub on your m/board.

When they work, its fine but when something goes wrong XP Pro gets confused and starts chasing its own tail.

Right now my PC in work (HP POS) is showing my USB Pen drive under 'my computer', with Total size, free space and all. When you double click on it, it shows an empty folder.

The only catch is that the drive is actually in my pocket.

Funny you should mention that i plugged in a external HDD to my PC last week and would only recognize the drive @ the 1.1 USB standard.

Once i updated my chip-set driver the problem resolved itself.

Like I said above i've tried that with both the home and pro cds with no luck.

Does anyone know where on the disk these drivers maybe.

Also would a fresh install fix this?

    Callen,

Below is the driver for XP for the Zen Touch, try this, it should still work with the sleek. If not no harm done.

This is the driver i used before i updated to 'Play for sure'.
