seems this will be the next battlefield. you've fought historically and modern...ally. it seems DICE are now working on a futuristic version of the series.
What can we expect for the future of the Battlefield franchise?

Dan Blackstone: We’re about to announce something very big, so stay tuned. One other interviewer asked this and I gave him a hint, so it’s only fair that I do the same for you: 3213/3X2. Or said another way: S.R. 4588164.

(3213/3)x2= 2142... S.R. stands for square root and if you calculate 4588164^1/2, you get 2142

I'm not a fan of futuristic games at all....I'm saddened at the very idea of this :(

I'd much rather it be kept in the current era...not 150 or so years in the future. I like playing with virtual guns and vehicles that are somewhat familiar.

aye. it uses the bf2 engine too though. so even when it comes out, expect patches galore.

in fairness it wasn't meant for our consumption. it was a tech demo. i'm sure for EA to get a budget sorted

Something like the future scenes out of Terminator would be rather spiffing.

they'll finish it alright. then find a small bug and patch it. but this patch will open a cataclysmic number of bugs that all need individual patches. and so the spiral continues!

Can't help but think it's coming too soon. It doesn't seem like a massive technical leap over #2.

autumn? they wont have the bf2 engine done by then! i'll still buy it though.

nice of them to slip in the 1.3 update though.

anyone know what the message to snoken means? cool that they recognise what the bf2 community (as it were) are up to - i.e. watching mine2

    Community Update - 3/21/06

    Hi BF fans,

Today we have some really big news to share with you. The more sniper-eyed of you out there will probably already know, but we're currently hard at work developing "Battlefield 2142", which is scheduled for release this Autumn. As you'll have guessed, this is a departure for the BF series as we're going into the future - something that a lot of you wanted to see happen in the BF universe. We're creating a ton of cool features that you won't have seen in any BF before, including cloaking devices, mines that follow you, awesome new rifles, guns and grenades, and of course, MECHS! We're developing this here in DICE Stockholm while the DICE Canada studio will be hard at work on a 1.3 update for Battlefield 2, as well as the Armoured Fury Booster Pack.

There'll be an "official" press release later on this week but we know that you guys need to know first. Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted on how 2142 is coming along.

    The BF2142 Team

P.S. Snoken - vi har sett fram emot Mine 2 och kan lugnt säga att vi inte blev besvikna!

EA AND DIGITAL ILLUSIONS ANNOUNCE BATTLEFIELD 2142 FOR PC

All-new Title from the Award-winning Battlefield Franchise to be set in the Future

Redwood City, Calif. – March 22, 2006 – Fight an all-out war for survival in the year 2142. Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Sweden-based developer, Digital Illusions, today announced development of the next installment in the award-winning Battlefield™ franchise, Battlefield 2142™. The ground-breaking first-person shooter is scheduled to ship this fall for the PC.

The year is 2142, and the dawn of a new Ice age has thrown the world into a panic. The math is simple and brutal: The soil not covered by ice can only feed a fraction of the Earth’s population. Some will live, most will die. In Battlefield 2142, players will choose to fight for one of two military superpowers in an epic battle for survival, the European Union or the newly formed Pan Asian Coalition. Armed with a devastating arsenal of hi-tech assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, players will also do battle using some of the most imposing vehicles known to man. Massive battle Mechs wage fierce combat on the ground, while futuristic aircraft rule the skies. When facing one of these new behemoths, players will need to use their wits and an arsenal of new countermeasures like EMP grenades to level the playing field.

"Battlefield has long been synonymous with innovative, best-of-breed online multiplayer action," said Sean Decker, Executive Producer, DICE. "By stepping into the future with Battlefield 2142, the team at DICE has reinvented the rules of engagement for the next century.”

Team play features allow up to 64 players to enter the action on the front lines as part of a formal squad, or work behind the scenes in Commander Mode to direct the strategic assaults of their teammates. With in-game success, players increase their rank and unlock awards, including new weapons, medals and more, delivering the most comprehensive and flexible persistence in the Battlefield universe to date. They should leave things like this to the mod community, because unless I'm mistaken that's all this is going to be, except we'll be asked to shell out €50 for it.
I have to say it doesn't appeal to me at all though, don't like the idea of it being set in the future at all, you want to play unreal, then play unreal, plus it's no wonder the patches are so slow in coming and so screwed, most of the dev team have obviously been working on this...
