You looking for an OS disk or a drivers disk?

If it's OS don't think the mods will allow that, a bit on the ol illegal side, even if you do have a license etc.

First thing to ask whenever you have to format someone's drive: "Have you got the CDs?" And don't believe them when they say yes. The amount of times the XP cd turns out to be Works.

Its legal to get the CD off a friend (or a boardster) once you have your Product Key. Also if you don't have the product key contact dell. If they disagree just start quoting the Sales of Goods and the Supply of Service Act 1980 ;)

Why the hell were you re-formatting a brand new laptop?

More than likely to get rid of all the spam programs that Dell install and set to run at start up, thereby halfing the speed of the machine.

    Spam Programs include;

    Eircom Broadband
    Gems? (Huh?)
    Otto? (even bigger huh?)
'Dell' photo studio (Actually Jasc software)
    McAfee Security suite

I forget the other three or four I had to unload when I got mine before Christmass (Dell inspiron 6000). They also have a pretty weird idea of how a drive should be set-up (See attached)..

Oh yeah - the above as well was pre-installed to mine even after I "SPECIFICALLY" requested that they not do. I "SPECIFICALLY" requested 1 partition with 1 basic Operating system (And not xp media cause it's buggy) and basic hardware drivers for installed hardware.

On complaint? I got basically told to 'Feck Off' (excuse my language) as well.

Well, Mr. Dell, I have a copy of the original contract and what 'I' ordered - See you in court!

    *Smiles ever so sweetly* :)

Most think I'm taking it to far but companies like this will continue there antics unless people challenge them. They are still bound by the same laws of commerce as anyone else is. If they trade in Ireland then they are subject to Irish trade laws. They are also subject to European trade laws and just because there some big multi national doesn't mean they can set there own criteria or install 'Spam' programs on peoples machines.

My solicitor reckons I have a very strong case on both counts.

Attach. Dell Irelands idea of setting up a drive

    Good luck with that. (TM)

    It's "value added" software. ;)
What doesn't suit you,may suit others. I'm sure they have a get-out-of-jail-free clause in their T&C when purchasing... At most, you'll get a refund and another PFO. (I hope the solicitors fees are worth it.)

Although the inclusion of "Eircom Broadband" crap should be considered unfair, it is common practice for other ISPs. *shrug*

Further cynicism: your solicitor gets paid either way... Cough. Which laws have they broken precisely (According to your lawyer)?

Dell charge an extra fiver for the OS cd, well worth it tbh.

I never even realised that Dell don't ship an OS cd with their computers, only a few weeks ago I spent ages looking for my cd because I was convinced I had lost it. At least now I don't feel bad for giving up on it.

The drive is set up like that by default. It's automated, and I doubt they'd change it just for you - why do you think you should get special treatment?

The partitions are: 94mb Utility - this is the "press F? to get utility" message. Allows diag and reporting stuff IIRC. The 4.xgb partition at the end of the drive is the one where the copy of your OS is stored. This allows the "press ? key for install menu" or something, that comes up at startup.

If you challenge Dell in court, please post up the results here. I'd love to see that case! :) :v:

BTW, as an OEM system builder Dell are not required to provide an original copy of the Windows OS install CD to you - all they are required to do is ensure that you can go back to factory default condition when/if required.
That's what the recovery partition (4.xgb) is for. If you delete it, then it's a tech support problem, and a PEBKAC one at that!
