    Greetings,

This is a notification to ALL PRESENT students of WIT (Waterford Institute of Technology) regarding the college's attempt to change the exam timetables. Not many people know this, but the Administration inside in the college is attempting to change the start date of the exams which will result in this term being cut short - this change which will effect EVERY student present in the college, whether your course is Semesterized or not.

At present the Academic Calendar for the college states that Semester 2 Exams are to start on Fri 12th to Fri 26th May 2006 with a study week from Mon 8th to Thurs 11th May 2006. This is what lecturers and students have been preparing for. However, the college is now trying to CHANGE these dates with immediate effect to ALL courses - Semesterized or not. The proposed NEW dates for the exams would be that you would start the exams a WEEK earlier -- Fri the 5th of May 2006.

This will result in the study week happening the week BEFORE the new proposed date for the exams. Thus, you will be missing a WEEK of planned lecturers which would originally of been used for revision, handing in of projects/assignments, covering some new topics that will appear on the exam etc. So as you can see, you will be missing an important week and will have to hand in projects/assignments EARLIER then originally though. Lecturers are claiming that as a result of this new change they will NOT have enough time to FINISH the subjects. Essentially you will be sitting an exam for a subject you have NOT fully covered which could cause you to fail the exam. You will NOT have enough time to finish assignments/projects - everything will have to be handed in earlier and it will be one big rush.

The college has tired to keep this on the quiet, and so not everybody knows about it. I have been told by very reliable sources that this is "semi-official" and NOT a rumor. The reason why I post here today is to inform you of this change and the major affects it will have on ALL of us. If you, like me and most of my year, disagree with the colleges proposed changes PLEASE PLEASE go to Students Union and make your voice heard. They have been informed of this change by me, and are taking complaints. The more that complain, the better chance we will have of getting this proposed change STOPPED.

I have been to several meetings, along with most of School of Science Class Rep's, with Paul Barry the head of School of Science. The one issue and concern raised by the reps was the lack of planning for Semesterisation and the fact that Semester 2 is very short and to tight to properly cover the course etc. Now they are proposing on making Semester 2 EVEN SHORTER! This is a disaster of a change and we need to stop it! Please, if you agree that this change is NOT a good thing, go to Students Union and make your complaint.

If you have any questions at all, do not hesitate to contact me.

    Thanks all!

I am a first year in WIT and have been told this by one of my lecturers but the impression i got from him was that there was not going to be any study week before semester 2 exams.

Originaly I was assured by the Students Union that there was no possible way they could remove our Study Week. Of course, they either lied or didnt give a ****e.

Its pretty much confirmed - our exams are starting early and to prevent loss of lecture time -- there will be no study week and that will be just lectures that week instead. Exact dates, format of exams etc are to be confirmed. The college is a right mess because they didnt think through Semestrisation fully. Pathetic really.
