First time Tilt, Brain Fart, Why? (no bad beat)

This was entirely my fault and I can’t believe how badly it’s eating me up.

Last night I had my first real TILT experience; It had nothing to do with some spanner hitting a flush with 4 hearts on the board or someone taking me out with 72o. As generally when this happens I can just say “crap happens” “thems the breaks” etc and not get too upset.

At the Gresham last night was at a fairly strong table Willow, Eddie the eagle and others that I know but names have slipped my mind.

Things started slowly for me not seeing too much to smile about pre-flop for the first 2 levels, I did pick up a couple of hands without going to the river and was up from 4K to 7K with relative ease.

Then picked up pocket ladies another one on the flop delighted to see the table calling station was in the hand and moved up to about 11K.

Felt really good about my play, believe I had the respect of most of the players at the table as I had played tight but aggressive when necessary and folded with one or two strong hands that turned out to be good folds.

I was up to about 14K and I looked down at AK and the board came 89K turn 8 river A – the other player involved in the had been calling all night with nothing a pushing all in with less but he had chips he caught his flops and rivers a few times but you could see the sharks gathering and dieing to trap. At the river there is over 6k in the pot and I make it 1,000 to play.

To be honest I was expecting/hoping to hear the words all in at the other end of the table, but he raised to 4,000 I thought for a while and felt this had been out of character from what I picked up if he had nothing he would have tried to push me off the hand. So I folded and stated I am folding top 2 pair A kicker, I don’t think anyone believed me at the time as it was stated for table image but true. The other player flipped over 8,9 and showed a house and I was convinced my mind had reached poker zen for the first time.

    So why the TILT:
After break I had just over 18K and was chip leader at the table, lost a blind or two picked up a few pots nothing special. I was playing tight folding Ace-rag probably half a dozen times. Then I decided to limp with Ad-2h flop comes Ah 7c 10c I make it 2 k to go a couple of folds and a very tight player came over the top with another 7K All-In. I immediately went to fold and then for no reason I can think of even after a sleepless night, I thought to myself, he doest have and Ace he is trying to steal, then managed to convince my self to fold, I said it in my head, I said it out load “there is no way I should call this, its over half my stack” yet 3 seconds later I heard “CALL” work its way out of my mouth. Sure enough he had AcKc and hit the flush for good measure.

I have never been so angry with myself the very next hand 2c,3c All-in and some how everyone folds, I was clearly on this word know as TILT for the first time. I started to calm down quickly in terms of shoving my chips in and then simply blinded away until I saw a A2s with about 5K in my stack and pushed into another AK no miracle card and went home disgusted.

So do you suffer from poker brain farts now and again?

Has it happened when you least expect it. I mean, we all make bad calls, play without to much flippancy now and again, but I was determined to win this last night, I was really focused on the cards and I played really well and them arghhhh.

I just can’t understand how I managed to fcuk it up so badly. And why I let it affect me for the rest of the night.

Let’s just say it’s a lesson learned and a nights sleep lost

Were you to the left of Willow in seat 4? If so then I was the player that won the hand, and you have the details a bit wrong. If it was a different hand, and you a different player then it seems very similiar.

I had limped in the cutoff with A4 spades. There had been a coupole of limpers and to be honest this was the best hand I seen all night. Flop comes AK6 with 2 spades. Checked around to you on my right and you bet (thought it was a bit less but 2k might be right). I love the flop but am sure I am currently behind, so go all in for about 7k in total (not more). You hm and haw and said those famous last words.... I shouldn't but..... and proceeded to talk yourself into calling with the A2 by saying I don't think you have the ace. I hit the flush on the river.

Seems like the same hand in parts, but not in others. I was in seat 5, and had moved to the table after Eddie got knocked out. I don't think I had played a hand in nearly 2 rounds of the table before that hand happened.

Yeah That was me. Cards may not be 100%, but the stories the same you where ahead with the kicker. But you confirm my point you played very few hands the first time you where at the table as well. I had you down as a tight player and didnt think you would push without top pair good kicker. Yet I still managed to mess it up.

You where still there when I went home in a huff - how did you get on?

No good. blinds got to big and cards not coming, ended up all in with A5s V AQo, and no help sent me home in about 15th.

I was playing tight for a couple of reasons.

    1. I was getting unadulterated crap dealt to me.
    2. The last time I played I was more aggressive and kept getting called by terrible players such as that Eddie the Eagle guy, so I was using a different tack this time. Mostly it was reason 1 though.

I hope there are two eagles out there but the eddie the eagle i know is absolutly muck! Does he play a lot of the pub tournaments around blanchardstown? If yes and from what i've seen live and online he is a terrible player. I stumbled across him online recently and in the last 5 sessions he has dumped around 5/6 buyins at levels between .50/1 and 1/2. I know he recently won/chopped a big tourney for 7k which when i heard about it couldnt believe my ears, now this would tell me he must be decent but i've personally seen nothing else to confirm this.

Is he a winning live cash game player maybe, or has he won quite a few live tourneys im not aware of?
