Just wondering if it would be possible to install Windows 2000 to a USB external HD? (as a secondary OS)

Quite possible. You'll need to have a recent BIOS though, and set the boot up order to USB.

Something you might be interested in is that there are versions of Linux that fit on a key fob (eg damnsmalllinux.org)

That might be a problem. Its the parents PC. They of course bought it in PC World and got sold a heap of junk really. Its about 4 years old so I wouldn't even attempt to update the BIOS on it. Reckon I'll just use the factory restore disc to get back to some semblance of working order. Either that or just do a clean install of Windows 2000. The only problem I have with that is I always find it realy difficult to get drivers for the crappy onboard sound on some PCs.

If it it still in partially working order then you should be able to find out by looking at the sound cards driver in the device manager.

If you know the manufacturer of the motherboard it's not too difficult to get the sound drivers. Also take a look on the motherboard for a small chip from Realtek, AD SoundMAX or C-Media it usually one of those three.
