I have put together a web-site using Netfusion 7. My knowledge of HTML is limited. For limited read non-existant. There are a couple of things I need help with please.

Firstly I have a visitor counter on the front page but I don't know how to put the text "You are visitor number" above it. Also the counter is incrementing when the visitor goes to a second page. This is giving me a totally false view of real visits.

Secondly I have been accepted to put ad-sense on the site ( click-whore I know but I gotta eat :D ).
Despite reading their "simple" instructions I just can't figure out where to put it.

Could someone have a look at the site, link in sig, and point me in the right direction.

Also any constructive criticism would be welcome, keep in mind though I am working at my limit here.

    Thanks.

Mods - I am not site pimping here.
The site is for services in France that I don't think would have any appeal to boards.ie posters.

put "You Are Visitor Number <br> " before
    <img src="nfcounter?id=918334-B6A3E3-100&font=odb&num_digits=05"><A HREF="http://www.netobjects.com"><IMG ID="BuiltWithNOF" HEIGHT=39 WIDTH=80 SRC="./assets/images/BuiltWithNOF.gif" BORDER=0 ALT="BuiltWithNOF"></A></TD>
    <TD COLSPAN=2></TD>

One soultion for teh counter problem woul be to use frames and have your navigation pane constant or you could just havf ethe counter on the front page but that would not count anyone entering on onre of your other pages.

Is the counter essential? Does your host not provide stats for your site?

The site looks nice to me

You put the google ad sense code exactly where you want the ads to appear on the page. A good idea might be to put some text in like --google go here-- then move that around untill its where you want the ads. then replace that bit of text with the google code, the ads will then appear exactly where the text was.

I would reccomend an invisible counter (you can get one at statcounter.com) that also has the option of tracking unique visits (rather than hits like yours) so you will get a more accurate picture of the number of visitors to your site.

I would also suggest removing the 'built with net objects fusion' image.

Thanks for the response. The counter isn't really necessary but it sort of gives visitors the impression that the site is popular and the business is well supported. A confidence building thing really. I'm hosted with Netfirms and they have a decent webstats package but its quicker to visit my site and check the counter rather than logging in with username and password etc.

I'll try that code you gave me.

I will be taking out the net fusion image , I was using it as a locator for the counter. Great minds think alike...

Np. The code I quoted is already on your page just put the text you want before it.

If all you want the counter to do is to create the impression of traffic would it not be better to leave it as it is?

Have you thought through your use adsense. The most difficult thing is to get people to visit you site do you really want to give them an easy out when you get them there?

I got everything working ok. Thanks for the help guys.
That's a good point about adsense, I hadn't really thought about that.
It's been such an effort to get it working so I'm going to leave it on for a while.

Last question, I hope, the task bar at the bottom of the screen says "Home - Wanadoo". I presume that's because I named my home page "home". Can I get the task bar to show the company name?

/ Edit It's ok I figured it out. Steep learning curve in these here parts.

I would disagree - I feel these things are kind of tacky and only appear on old or beginner websites and therefore don't inspire confience.

If I were you I would remove the counter.

If you want to record statistics and find out where people are going on your site, then you should use something like Statcounter.com. They are an irish company and provide an invisible web tracker, which gives loads of details and is really easy to install. Best of all it is free. I have used it on a number of sites and find it great.

You're probably right about the counter. I've made it invisible. It is from Statcounter.com , as suggested earlier by Cognos. The feedback it gives is quite good.

Oops! I missed that post by Cognos. Sorry!

One other thing. Are you making any real money from the google ads on the site?

If not, I would consider removing them, because my first impression of the site when I saw the site was that it was a blog, rather than a company.

I know this query wasnt looking for a site review but I just want to point out that on my 1024*768 screen I have two vertical scrollbars for something that shouldn't really need them.
anyway back on topic I guess.

I think the scroll bars were caused by frames on the page which I have since removed. I have since removed the adsense; for two reasons, the advice given here was spot on, secondly some of the ads were for rival companies in my area. I need that like a hole in the head.
So we've gone full circle. I achieved everything I set out to do in the OP, then undid it, but I have learned quite a bit in the interim.

    Thanks again for the help.

    Hagar -

Regards the rival companies that appear in the AdSense ads, you can set up a filter for URLs you do not want to appear in the ads under the AdSense Setup/Competitive Ad Filter tab in the AdSense control panel.

Having said that though I wouldn't place AdSense on a small services website. IMO it could undermine the value of the service for some.

    All the best!
