DVD-R burn taking 20 hours

I'm using a new 16x Lite-On DVD-Rewriter for the first time with Nero VisionExpress to burn some AVI files to an 8x DVD-R. The problem is, Nero was telling me it would take 20 hours to complete. I ran it for an hour and there was still over 18 hours left, so I had to stop it. This is hardly normal is it?

The only thing I can think of is that the AVIs are in NTSC format and I told Nero to convert them to PAL when it prompted me just before burning. Could this possibly add so much time to the burn?

edit: One thing I should mention. The AVI files are very fragmented, could this be the problem? I didn't have enough free space on my HD to defrag properly so I was trying to get rid of all my video onto DVD to free up space.

Converting NTSC to PAL changes the resolution and colour depth of the image, so its not unreasonable that it would take the bulk of the time. Perhaps you should try to convert it first, and burn then. By chopping the job into two you might save a bit of time.

    It's the conversion time.

Burn a sample dvd with the straight avi

    It's all adding up.

You need 15% free space to defrag. But you also need space to allow for compression (AVI-MPG2).

Get a couple of DVD RWs and create some free space on your machine by burning smaller files off, then defrag. It will help, but you'll still be waiting while the conversion takes place. The wait is determined by your processor speed, available memory, disk i/o and bus speed.

What's the run time of the AVIs? (Most authoring software recommends one hour footage per dvd, typically I run mine for up to 90 minutes)

What's the quality like? (If it's dvd quality then you need a higher bitrate which will give you a bigger file that may not fit on a single dvd)

If you want to test the burner, then get a sample burn project (MPG2) and burn it as video DVD. There are pre-built samples available here click on 'DVD Architect Project for Test Burning'
