I was watching the bbc news last night and they were on about Bristol. It appears that they are putting up mast and using wifi to give people free internet access. They are planning on doing this all across England and Wales in the coming year. I don't suppose we unlucky fools would be fortunate enough to get a simular system set up here. Would we?

I connected upi the usb wifi card and was getting around to the router, now here is where it is getting kind of tricky for,

I have no phone line connected to my router or even the the jack plugs.

And i am recieving internet as i type this now i am doing 360s around the room with my desktop.

Now what is going wrong or right lol. How am i recieving the internet and from where or whom/

Does this mean I can now cancell my own account and use this source?
As i am not using a phone line I imagine I could am I wrong?

Someone near you probably just has a Wireless network setup and they haven't secured it. I wouldn't rely on it to always be there, they could simply switch their router off.

There will be signs that you are using it also, the owner will see his speed cut in half while you are using his network. That is it it is in a private house, etc. If you are getting free internet from a company near you, they probably wouldn't notice you using their network if they have left it unsecured, but they might remotely shut their network down in the evenings/weekends.

If you are getting free internet, no harm! I wouldn't go and disconnect your only 'ligit' internet connection to rely on a signal where you don't know the source, it might disappear in the morning!

I wouldn't call it theft if someone is too bone idle to encrypt their wireless network. I'd call it negligent and miserly and they get what they deserve..

If you can afford the computer and a wireless router,
you can afford to get it set up properly.

So if someone is too "bone idle" to lock their front door it's OK for anyone to go in and steal their Plasma TV? Don't think so.

I lived in Islington in London until a few weeks ago and 2 or 3 different organisations gave free wireless to the whole area.. [heres one - http://www.silicon.com/networks/mobile/0,39024665,39129637,00.htm]

When our office network went down or somehting broke we could just search for a wireless network and take our pick from a bunch of them and your back up and running..

I think we are a bit of time away from that at home!

    TBH your opinion means nothing.
    The law is clear.
