Surveys in 1st Year CS lab

Some woman was just in the 1st year lab and asked me to take a survey. I said no straight out as I "had work to do", but then she wore me down saying it would only take a few minutes, showing me her company ID etc. to reassure me that it wouldn't be a complete waste of time. So I agreed.

25-30 mins later and it's just finished  . It was the same questions over and over, about financial institutions and student accounts mainly.

Being annoyed at my weakness to stand by my simple "no", I ask the question - are people like this woman allowed to just come into a lab and just bother others with surveys?

Agreed. If you are bothered again, write down her name and the company paying for her. Calmly inform her that you will report them to services.

Occasionally postgrads need people to fill out surveys/test. This is so they can get a human's answers to the questions, then see how their computer did. They are voluntary, and are normally very sound about it.

I felt so weak for being too nice and taking the survey.

I did grow a pair at the end though - she insisted I give her my home address, and after telling her where I had bank accounts and such, I had no intention of doing this, so I said ''I'm not comfortable givng you my address''. She insisted again, and this time I came out with a flat ''no'', so she thanked me and left.

I have become a man.

    Hold me. :o

If the person was from within UCD (postgrad, computer services etc.) then
it would be reasonable for them to be around the place. If they were from
outside the Uni then both Services and Communications take a very harsh
    line.

If it becomes know campus is a cheap source of people to survey you
can be sure they will only increase. If the person cannot assure you they
are from UCD, then personally I would call Unicare on 7999 and ask them if
this person should be here. (In this circumstance I would have no
hesitation in asking a member of staff to help out -we do care! honest).

Some companies are allowed on campus to promote things, in return for
support of a student event for example. However, I couldn't imagine
anyone in communications or security allowing unsolicited approaches
in student labs for a corporate survey. Sounds suss to me.

    Aaron.

Well she's here again today, and she's got another live one right now ;) . She showed me some ID card for her company yesterday - I didn't recognise the name (the card didn't look all that professional to be honest), so I don't think they're sponsoring any student events or anything like that that you mentioned. Despite my complaining, she seems nice enough and I don't want to call services on her (because I've already been surveyed and can't be again:) ).

IF she comes to the 2nd year lab I WILL tell her to f*ck off.
(miracle that it is that Kirby is out here on a Friday, no lectures, just a project meeting)

    Hi,
I'm going to let Services and Computer Services know this is happening.
If they are aware of it, they might be able to advise students what to do
so these people are not bothering you while you are working.

Just PM me if you have any information on when and where this happened,
what the survey was about and the name of the person (if anyone knows it).

    Cheers,
    Aaron.
