    Does anyone know if its true that there are about 30 million Irish passports worldwide?
    It seems a bit unlikely.

    There are around 30 million 2nd generation irish abroad, in other words they would be eligible for irish nationality.

    I heard this in relation to the fact that only 25% of Americans hold passports.
    There would easily be 30 million 2nd generation Irish but do they all hold Irish passports?

    .. as for the OP my cousin is American, never set foot in Ireland and has an Irish passport. His mother is Irish (and also has an Irish passport desite only living in Ireland for 19 years or so).

    Only if you count expired ones.

    I think its something like 5-6 million.
