Betting into a side pot - specific scenario

[An initial overview: This hand occured during last night's DC in the Fitz, sometime after the break. A player had just been all-in, had slightly outchipped his opponent, and when lost was left with a single 25 chip. He then went all-in with muck and managed to win the main pot vs the two blinds and now had 75. Blinds were 150/300, I had about 3k left, average was over 7k]

    From my blog:

At one stage a player was down to 75, and the blinds were 150/300. He pushed, I was on the button and I called along with the two blinds. I had 98o, the flop was KJ6 rainbow. It was checked around, turn was an A. It was checked around to me again, I knew (playing vs. Macker and another regular) that I would take the side pot if I bet, so I threw out 700 into a side pot of 675. They duly folded, and the short stack took down the main pot of 300 with Q-high. The other two sighed loudly, grimaced and complained to me about checking it down, but I can't say I agree with them. I increased my stack by over 20% by taking the side pot, and the short stack still only had a single big blind to play with.

What do you think? Was I wrong to bet into the side pot, knowing that it was quite likely the short stack would take the main pot of 300?

With an already established side pot I see nothing wrong with placing that bet. I would probably have a different view if their had been no side pot, but the way the hand played out is fine to me.

You can be sure if they had any bit of that flop, regardless of the player all in, they would have done the same. Its not like ye were moving up the money at the final table.

    You scoundrel Paul!.
Didnt read the replies but i think this is one occasion where your perfectly alright to do this. Nice pot for you and its not as if the all-in player is back in the game and force to be reckoned with again.
    Let them sigh away!

You knew they were going to moan before you did it. Poker isn't a team game and the move is +EV being so far from the money. Get it in there I say!!

Plus you might get action on some dry side pots some other night when you flop a set because they think you're mad it's all about the image :p

I knew Macker was going to moan alright, but I have a lot of time for the other player (can't remember her name, but a very nice lady). They were really annoyed at me, and I subsequently at them, though I didn't bother arguing with them. Though it's not the first time I have disagreed with some of the esteemed Fitz regulars, some of them are really 'interesting' players!

The fellow who won the main pot (a single big blind) went on to quintruple (is that a word? won five times his stake) up a few hands later when his 93o caught a magic board of A4433. He then worked his way up to 2k before being knocked out and I could tell some of the other players at the table still blamed me for his survival.

quite simply poker isn't a team game. Its about you and only you, I would have no hesation about beting into, creating a side pot if i felt I could get more chips out of it.

This is a perfectly fine move
the chips he gets do not make him a danger

And a very nice low risk move for you
It is not as if your anywhere near a bubble where I could understand this been frowned on

When people complain about a situation like this, I normally just agree and apologise and say perhaps they are right, and then mark them down as clueless fish.

You read your two remaining apponents perfectly and got 675 chips as your reward.

You should be blamed for his survival, it was all your fault he went on to play another hand after this you monster
