I heard good things about this Coolmine Jiu Jiu, check it out. And for Gods sake won't somebody who begins in a place write up a report of their first night? I know some people have done it but I think it's interesting. I beginners view of MA.

    Petals, you have a mission!

I suppose I could do that if I do go in. But what type is in Coolmine?

I do some sort of Ju jitsu (although badly) and I'm not really sure what type that is either but it'd be nice to try stick to a similar style if possible.

hi petals, there is probably a few types of jj out there, the difference is in the training methods traditional jiu jitsu afaik dont train against resisting opponents which pretty much invalidates the training, as its not functional, roper mentioned brasilian jiu jitsu which is a groundfighting system which trains in a functional way against resisting opponents making it applicable in everyday circumstances also a great way to keep fit, maybe im a little biased though! why not try a couple see which one you like best1 would be cool if you could write a report of your experience! good luck

the jj in coolmine isn't completely unlike bjj. they have sound methods. mick, you ever been up there?

    Hi Petals,

I also teach martial arts in the Coolmine Sports and Leisure Centre and have met the guys teaching Ju-Jitsu and have to say that they are sound blokes and very hard working and passionate about what they do.

You asked about Brazilian Ju-Jitsu. I have done a little research recently and it seems that the main difference between "Classical" Ju-Jitsu and "Brazilian" Ju-Jitsu is that the latter only includes techniques that can be pressure tested as hard and as fast as possible against a resisting opponent. They also utilise Gross motor unit movements such as putting an arm lock on someone rather than fine motor unit movements such as putting a finger lock on someone or applying a pressure point technique. As such BJJ would be closer to Judo than Classical Ju-Jitsu. I could be wrong in any of the above and if I am anyone is free to correct me as this is not my field. :)

As far as I am aware the lads in the Coolmine Sports and Leisure Centre teach Classical Ju-Jitsu however they "also" have a strong background and actively teach and complete in Judo so you would seem to have the best of both worlds there.

The sports centre is on the Snugsborough Road Extension in Blanchardstown accross from the fire station and behind the shopping centre. If you want any further details pm myself or Mear. He used to train there and is I think a green belt.

    Regards,

    Michael O'Leary

Very good blue belt level. Ridiculously good pins and base

Correct Michael O leary, Im still a green belt and still training there :)
(Although not tonight, hurt back in Judo on tuesday)

Petals: The class has no seperate times for beginners. A lower grade is paired with a higher grade, so you'll be in good hands.

Maxbax = ? You train up there too?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 620 ✭✭✭MaxBax

no only once or twice. i got owned by a 14 year old so i decided i'd never go back, assume that never happened, and continue thinking i'm a purple belt standard but just dind't bother with the grade cos i'm too slick.
