The GAA have confirmed that the appeals on behalf of the Dublin and Tyrone players suspended following the violent scenes at Healy Park have been upheld.

The GAA'S Central Appeals Committee met last night and revoked the suspensions initially imposed on the Tyrone trio Kevin Hughes, Owen Mulligan and Michael McGee, along with Dublin's Ciaran Whelan, Alan Brogan, Kevin Bonner and Bryan Cullen.

Six of the seven were hit with eight-week bans, with Cullen suspended for four weeks, after the Central Disciplinary Committee carried out an investigation into the incidents which marred the explosive NFL tie on February 5.

How can this be??? I'm an ardent Dublin supporter, and I think this is an absolute joke. Granted there may have been one or two mistaken identities, but the vast majority of the sentences are valid.

Another example of how the GAA's disciplinary system is a joke.

Dublin and Tyrone players win appeals against suspensions

    12:21 Wednesday March 8th 2006

The seven players suspended following the violence that marred the recent National Football League game between Dublin and Tyrone have won appeals against their punishments.

Tyrone trio Kevin Hughes, Owen Mulligan and Michael McGee were suspended for eight weeks along with Dublin's Kevin Bonner, Alan Brogan and Ciaran Whelan as a result of a series of brawls during the game in Omagh on February 5th.

Dublin's Bryan Cullen was also suspended for six weeks.

All seven players challenged the bans and GAA's Central Appeals Committee ruled last night that the suspensions will no longer apply.

Wasn't expecting that at all, will all 4 players be back in the squad for the weekend game against Cork?

bruachain, one wonders is there a disciplinary system in the GAA given some of the punishments handed down over the recent past.

that is a joke! Players can go out now and do the same week in week out and might get off with it!

I'm a big fan of the GAA, but this is a total joke. How can the players involved suffer no consequences of what went on in Omagh? I haven't heard the details myself, but I suspect there was a bit of legal loopholing done to get them off on a technicality, or at least I hope there was. If the CAC truly believes that the players deserve no punishment, then I will be even more sickened.
Poor discipline is a major stain on Gaelic games, and this just sends out the message that the GAA doesn't give a damn.

    again,

BS on the associations behalf tbh.

Why not just remove the rules period and avoid this farce in the future if they bloody well can't make a proper decision.

fs, there have been players banned for offences in club games that are similar but it seems the two biggest inter county team have a different set of rules.

    Arse.

Does anyone think the GAA may have revoked the bans in order to avode another farce with the DRA?

In the good old days they gave them a suspension that ended at mid-day of their next match.

    Now they suspend and cancel.

The refs wave yellow cards. What is that for?

    Punch away lads.

I am a big Dublinfan, and I was sickened by the scenes in Omagh, what message does this send out to kids and young lads coming up, GAA got this one wrong, wasnt enough suspensions given IMO in the first place.

Before everyone falls off their high horses, lets just remember the facts.

The likes of Whelan, Brogan, Bonner and McGee were found to have done nothing to warrant a red card - after a review of the video evidence. However the media of course had a real go, and these players were among those named so the GAA charged them with the nonsensical charge of "discrediting the association". Why these lads and no others? Why has nobody ever been charged with discrediting the association for being involved in handbags previously?? Don't forget that they also picked out Ryan McMenamin to be charged under this as well - before realising that he wasnt even involved in the big melee!! - Proof that they were just looking for scapegoats.

The only men caught on video striking (who the ref hadnt dealt with) were Cullen, Mulligan and Hughes. These were the only men who should have been charged and suspended for 4 weeks each, and if the GAA had left it at that, together with the fines to the county boards, there would have been no appeals and it would all have been done and dusted. And in any event these lads have served most of their 4 week suspensions and have missed games - the suspensions would have ended this Saturday.

I am positive that if an appeal had been heard regarding the 8 week suspensions, the appeals would have been withheld, and there was zero justification for those bans.

But I totally agree that its a huge nonsense that the appeals didnt even get heard because of a technicality

gaa is a complete ass when it comes to the rule book. seriously its no conincidence that tyrone cancelled their match against cork due to 'weather conditions'. they knew theres enough loopholes to get their players off, so come on, it doesnt take a genius to work out they played it smart, having them back the next week!!!
