Heres the catch, my top end is 1500 Euro. New or secondhand

I want something with a 6800 Go or better minimum, where would I even start looking ? Dells with that spec are all over the 2K mark.

    Hey there

My friend works for Fujitsu-Siemens Ireland and he is getting me a M3438G

    Specs are

    1.6GHz P-M Dothan
    512MB RAM
    80GB Hard Disk
    6800 GO 256MB edition
    DVD RW DL 8x
    17" screen
plus all the other usual bells and whistles.

And all for the nice price of 1250

They are 16 day returns, only thing is that they have 6 months warranty

If there is interest in this I MIGHT be able to get one maybe 2 more.

Plus we wouldnt be paying any VAT, with the VAT they would have been over 1500.

Great Deal, WHat ya think ?

Buy a Shuttle and a TFT screen. Better value, faster, and you'll be able to upgrade it. Get a lan tote bag and you can move it where you want.

It seems dell have switched to the X1400 for the new 9400's :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,942 ✭✭✭wingnut

I believe that is temporary due to short supply of the 7800s. You'll have to hang tight and wait for them to come back as they are much better than the X1400

aye thats what im planning on. there is no way im going to fork out that much for something with a x1400 in it

LIDL or ALDI have great laptops. I bought mine back in October for €1399 and it's still pretty top-notch in the market.

    Medion-made laptop:
    1.73 GHz Intel Centrino
    2 Mb Cache
    1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon X700 XL (Plays Doom 3, F.E.A.R, Battlefield 2 at unbelievable quality!)
    100 GB Hard Drive
    17" Wide Screen
    Wi-FI
    Bluetooth
5.1 Dolby jack at the back of the laptop
    8x DVD Dual layer burner
3 1/2 hours battery (no game drains it's battery)
Great sound from the two tiny speakers (I really mean great sound!)
Finger print sensor which you can log in and lock folders with (Sorta useless but fun to show off)
    Media Center w/ remote
    3 year warantee
    TV Out
TV In (Tv Tuner Card came with it)

And to top it off the touchpad lights up with all sorts of functions for opening programs and tons of other crap.

Alone it's an unbelievable gaming machine, bought from the usually overlooked LIDL and ALDI stores. I use it for my networking course and it's a goddamn dream to work with. I'd give it another month or so when they'll advertise another monster.

Sooo, anyway. Just saw what I thought was a bargain on the Dell Outlet and decided to go for it. Rush of blood to the head and all that. Feeling slightly guilty now.

Anyhoo, perhaps someone can ease my mind and tell me if I actually did get a good deal, here it is.....

Dell Inspiron 9400, Dual Core 2400 (1.86) CPU, 2GB Ram, Geforce 7800 Go, 80GB (5400 sadly) Hard Drive, DVD Burner etc.... €1390 for the lot (that was including VAT, delivery and all that stuff). Bargain? About Right? Bad deal ?

yep you've gotten youself a damn good deal there mate!! Out of interset what frequency is the ram 533 or 667MHz??

Its 667. Good to know that it seems to be a decent deal. Big desktop fan, never thought I would buy a gaming laptop

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 251 ✭✭nl

I was the exact same. I never even considdered a laptop untill the 9400 came out. I go to college in Dublin and I come home to Dundalk at the weekend so it made sense. Thats what swung it for me.
Its a beast of a machine and especially with the Core Duo and the 2GB of ram you will notice a massive performance increase. Also with the 2GB of ram you will not need any paging file (virtual memory) so make sure you turn that off. Switching between a game and windows is very fast with this setup.

Thanks for the tip, I am hoping that the WUXGA screen is standard, all it says is 17", doesn't mention anything else. I guess it will be a bonus if it is.

Do you have your gfx overclocked ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 251 ✭✭nl

Yea the WUXGA is a very nice screen if you do get it. You will be able to play alot of games at the max resolution of 1920x1200 which looks really nice.

In terms of the 7800 Go I have it set to 370MHz core and 870MHz memory. This gets me 5850 points in 3dmark05.
Iv also seen that you can flash the bios to increase the core voltage from between .1 and .3V. People are getting over 7000 in 3dmark05 with this flash. But I dont think ill be risking that any time soon!! Mabey in about a year or so when this machine is struggling with the new games id consider it.
