I took advice from someone on the work forum and decided to get my tax credit checked, in case they might have owed me a few bob.

Anyhow, I got statements sent out for 2002, 03, and 04 - and on my statement for 03 they have been down as having worked in 3 places, I only worked in 2 places, and the one I dont recognise says I earned 3k there, so I look the place up in the phone book, and I call it and get a voice mail for the head office of a hotel thats near my house!!!

    WTF????

Someone was working under my name and pps???? How?

Also, they reckon I owe them €168 in taxes for that year, but thats a load of bull becuase I didn't technically earn what they said I earned.

How the hell did this happen? and how the hell can I fix it?

Do you share a house with anyone who might have used your PPS number?

Call into the hotel in question and ask to see your file. Hopefully they'll have a picture ID in it to prove it wasn't you. Then contact the tax office again and if necessary the Gardaí to report the identity theft.

I called the company, lets call them X development, that appeared on my statement, they told me to call the hotel, I have, and i got passed from pillar to post, they say they will ring me back.

I live at home, with my folks and my family, I hoenstly cannot figure out how someone else would have had my details.

Would the wage payment have to be made out to the same name as the employment details?

As in, if they worked under sillysausage, pps 123456u, then their wages should have been made out to a sillysausage, no?
even a cheque would have been made out to my name?

How would they get away with it?

get in contact with the tax office, explain all of the above and demand that they explain how this could have happened, insist on them getting it sorted and ask for the explaination in writing.
This will make you look serious and they will withdraw the demand for extra tax to be paid.
Tell the tax office that you are going to the cops to report this fraud

    yes
but there can be more than one sillysausage in ireland.
I work in a wages dept, all anyone needs when joining the company is a PPS number and their name. We require them to open a bank account, if this other person has opened an account, I'd like to know how, they would need proof that they are who they say the are. Perhaps they got paid cash?

Easily enough I'm afraid. If they have a job in your name and using your PPS then they could also have bank accounts and credit cards too. Check into this immediatly, call to the Hotel in person and demand to see what they have on you/this person.

As to how they got the information, do you bin your P60 or tax credit information when it arrives? Someone could have stolen it from the bins or dump.

I have heard of this happening before. Exactly as you mention it.
Its not your fault though. Ultimate responsibility lies with the Revenue.
there fcuk up. you won't need to pay them anything for 'their' mistake.

The confusing part is how close the hotel is to my home, could it really just be a coinsidence, or is it likely that somehow I know this person?
Our house was broken into a few years back, I never noticed something like my details going missing, but they could have, otherwise, could my details be taken from files in an old job? Because I used to work part time in my local shopping centre a while back, through college

Hey Sillysausage, something similar happened to me. I was never into looking at my tax credits so when i used to get the letter every year i would just file it away with all my other stuff. Anyways one day last month one of the girls i worked was saying that she wasn't registered to the company we work for. So i checked my tax credit & saw i was registered to a company i never even heard of wtf. I called the tax office (cranky lady i was speaking to) said i was registered to them i told her my story that i never even heard of that company she changed it there & then when i gave my employers reg no. All sorted now in my case.

As for you i have to agree with Beruthiel demand answers from them it does seem like someone was using your pps no.

Let us know how ya get on

Wow that is scary. If it was me I would type up an official letter with all the dates, details of employers you worked for for the relevant periods. Also route out any P60's you have for those years too. If you haven't got your P60's you could ring the relevant employer(s) who would have your details probably on a Tax Deduction Card, spreadsheet or their P35 declation summary page. Route out all that info and type up an official letter asap and post it to the tax office. Let us know how you get on.

it could be any of the above tbh, all anyone needs is your name and PPS number

I had the same thing for 2 years. They gave me the wrong PPS number to begin with so all of my tax credits etc were credited to someone else.
The cause? Someone out there has the same name as me. You would think the tax office would make sure of these things.

Took another 2 years to get it sorted.

It may or may not be the fault of the tax office

A few things possibilities that spring to mind are the following:
Did you ever lose your purse containing a wage slip or your card with your name and PPS number on it?
Have you ever thrown out anything with those details on it?
Have you had tax info sent to another address you might have lived at?

The good news is that at least now you know about it, so you can try and get it sorted out.

    Good Luck with it ;)

No, but the house was broken into and my bag was stolen, so details may have been in it and i never noticed them missing at the time

Have you ever thrown out anything with those details on it?

    No, never.

Have you had tax info sent to another address you might have lived at?

I have only ever lived at one address

It's your boobs!!! They've now grown a mind of their own due to the attention they're getting there. They've had so much exposure from your hundreds of photos of yourself (do you have a seperate folder on your PC?) they want emancipated!

I think I have 8 or 9 pictures posted on boards, but I guess thats 16, or 18 boobs, and they are pretty gigantic, and fairly exposed, so perhaps your right.

sillysausage, if you could arrange a meeting between your breasts and myself, I'd be very grateful. Do they have a busy calendar?

I will ask their agent if they can, eham, squeeze you in, seriously though, I want to keep this thread on topic, becuase I really want to know what the boards users think of this situation.

How it could have happened, and what I can do from here.

I have contacted the tax office, I emailed explaining whats happend, and I have called them as well.

Do I just leave it with them now?

Go to the hotel, they should be able to look up the information about the person there using the same PPS number. They probaby won't tell you anything about the person, but they should be able to confirm if somebody worked there.

I personally would get the name of the person in the tax office who will be dealing with it.
I'd give them a few days to sort it and I would continue to ring until I was satisfied it had been fixed.

as for the person who did this, I would be more than curious to find out who it was. I believe I'd ask the cops to find out who is pretending to be me.
