    Hello Guys,

This problem is spiralling out of control. Ill try and keep it short but include all relevant info:

Firstly i was fixing a problem with a friends windows xp sp1 which had the following problem.

ie could no longer access internet and desktop background had become white and the following error kept appearing in normal mode or safe mode.

"This application has failed to start because WININET.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this"

Now system restore wouldnt work along with a couple of other things but i just taught the best way to restore the system files was doing and windows xp upgrade which should have restored windows files without wiping hard drive, program files or settings.

In heinsight i should have tried something on this lines:

You will need to boot to safe mode and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32
folder and rename the infected wininet.dll file to wininet.old then go to the
C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder and copy the wininet.dll file there then
paste it in the system32 folder replacing the infected one you renamed.
After it has been replaced restart your computer and then delete the
    wininet.old file

or put system restore disc in d:\ drive and
    run> cmd
    EXPAND -r D:\i386\Wininet.dl_ C:\Windows\System32\Wininet.dll

System had avg and zone alarm but no spyware remover, again i should have ran spybot and adaware but i had no access to internet on this pc to download them so i taught the upgrade was the simplest option:

Anyway i got as far as the "windows is being installed" and i get this error:

Ive narrowed down the error because most of the other bits are irrelevant ut heres the bits that are:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

    BAD_POOL_CALLER

    Blah

    Blah

    Technical Info:
    STOP 0x000000c2 (oxoooooo7,0x00000cd4,0x00340045,0xe24bde64)

    Beginning Dump of physical memory
    Physical Memory dump complete

    blah blah blah

Now i dont know if this problem is related to the original problem and from the searching ive done i dont think so i think this is more related to a hardware or software conflict possibly. But im now stuck because the only thing any of the options allow me to do is to continue restarting windows setup and that keeps looping until it reaches the above error.

Ive tried everything after i press f8 on startup and it wont let me start safe mode, says safe mode cant start when setup is trying to start. Also all the other options in f8 cause the system to start reboot and then it restarts the setup and as i said setup keeps crashing with the above error.

Now this friend has some info on the hard drive that he dosent want to lose so im not sure what to do next. Can you not start a command prompt in xp from the start up menu and if so is there anything i can do in command prompt to try and fix the problem like

    EXPAND -r D:\i386\Wininet.dl_ C:\Windows\System32\Wininet.dll

or anything that will let me restart windows so i can run some spyware and backup the files in his documents.

If not is it possible to remove his hard drive and put his hard drive in my pc, both dell pcs, and explore his hard drive and copy settings for his emails, favourites and my document folders to a disc and then format his hard drive and do a clean re-install.

Im desperate here and i keep getting in deeper and deeper. please help

Yes i found similar googles but none of them seem to specify what to do if you are stuck in an upgrade loop at the time of error. My real question is can i access dos/command prompt to fix this (bearing in mind i cant even start windows in safe mode) and if not is it possible to remove the hard drive into another pc and remove all the my documents and my email information and then do a clean re-install. Also if i cant get out of this upgrade and error loop how can i reinstall windows xp, can i format the drive on his computer or will i have to format the drive when the hard drive is in the other computer and if so how do i do that??

Im really depsperate so any help would be great, at this stage ive giving up fixing the problem, i just want to recover the data and do a clean re-install

Yes you can transplant the harddrive into another pc, vrius/spy ware scan etc.. and then back everything up on the working pc.

After backing up, you could either wipe the harddrive from the working pc, or just put back into the original pc and wipe it using the windows XP OS disk.

Would advise to then use the WinXP OS disk to partition the hardrive.

i.e. one partition of 20 gig or so for windows and apps and then divide up the rest of the hardrive as you see fit.

The advantage being if this happens again: you just reinstall windows on the windows partition.

If the windows partition gets wiped/formatted all the other partitions are not affected.

Would it then be possible when i transplant my friends hard drive to run anti spyware and remove the problem off that disk. Then can i try booting windows xp off his hard drive by going into bios and setting it to boot windows from his hard drive.

I can then test out if the wininet.dll file has fixed or not. Would this work or not???? i know i have different hardware etc so maybe this wouldnt work at all. curious though, but worst comes to worst im happy to just back up his disk and do a reinstall on his pc

btw you say that i can just wipe the hard disk after backing up the files, how do i do this. It wont let me do anything on his pc because its still in the middle of installing the upgrade but how can i do it on my pc

would i do something like this:

    run
    cmd
format f:/ (assuming f is the drive that gets assigned to my friends hard drive)

im not sure of the correct syntax for reformatting so please let me know the correct way. My pc is a dell running windows 200 btw

    Cheers

When you slap your mates hardrive into your PC: windows on your machine will pick it up as just another data harddrive.

(if it's an IDE hard drive make sure it is set to slave/cable select)

You SHOULD be able to just browse the contents of the harddrive, scan it back up etc..

So as windows sees it as a normal hardrive you can format it through cmd or by right click in my computer.

or by using the disk manager:
control panel-> admin tools -> computer managment -> storage -> disk managment.

You can also wipe a hardrive by running setup off his Win XP disk: boot by cd, run the setup.

Go through the options and there is an option to install/reinstall winXP, selected that and then select the format hard drive option.

If windows setup will let you and you are not stuck in a loop :-)
