I've been offered a 15 flat screen (bout a ton 50 :)).. The refresh rate is 23ms on one type 16ms on the other.. a HP and an ACER respectively... not knowing much can anyone tell me if these are worth the price and would be any good for playing Halo.. only game I play so doesn't have to be super fast.

The shortest refresh rate means that it will look smoother when you have motion. However, you need to take other things into account too: I would normally assume that the HP is better quality than Acer, but not having bought either in recent years, this may not be true. You don't want dead pixels, you want crisper colours, etc.

Actually a 15" won't get you better resolution than 1024x768, so be aware that this may also restrict your apps.

With a 23ms response time you are going to notice ghosting in games, it kinds depends on the game but FPS games are the usual suspects.

If you are a switcher from a CRT to LCD then you will notice a difference right away but with sustained use you will get used to it and not notice it as much at least in some titles.

Displays with a lower response time are a tricky one to call as often to achieve the lower response time they use a panel which offers less in terms of colour accuray so you have a trade off in that the ghosting might disappear completely but the colours wont look quite right.

Some of the newer low response time displays are getting better at that though if you are a serious gamer with a decent CRT monitor I would consider sticking with it unless you really want the LCD.

If you dont give a fig about the colours go with one of the 16ms displays.

Thanks for the advice guys.. Am not a seroius gamer on Pc's. I would go more for trying to get smoother and lag-less play than be worried if my now dead corpse has the right shade of blue on the armour.. a good all round monitor is what I need I think..

Your helps been much appreciate.. I'll hold out and get a 17in I think..

just make sure your cpu/graphics card has enough horsepower to play your games in the native resolution of whatever monitor you choose. Most 17" ones will be 1280x1024. If you run them in any resolution other than the native one things will generally look sh1t.
