Racial Differences

I noticed that our university has a Black Students society, and an Asian Students society, like a lot of universities have. But I'd say no university has a White students society. Why is this? Personally I don't think there should be any societies based entirely on race, but if there is, I think there should be ones for all races.
Of course, if someone set up a White students society, everyone would think they were racist. Whyis every race other than white able to be proud of their race, but no white person can be?

Assuming you're in Ireland there is a difference. Whites are the vast majority here while Asians and Blacks are small minorities. It would therefore be harder for them to meet/socialise with people of the same culture, heritage, etc. Don't worry, they're not planning a revolution.

I think it's more to do with them being part of a racial minority. If you went to live a black dominated country, you would no doubt feel "out of place" so i society would give you a feeling of home.

Well, in fact, White people are a minority at this university. (It's London South Bank University). Only 44% of people here are white.

But still, Whites would be the largest race group there. And besides, London is a White culture. It has a White history. These other races need a place within London's white society to celebrate, experience and discuss their own heritage. The university is a practical option.

Please don't get me wrong but why is this happening??

We should be able to set up these sort of societies aswell why should we feel that we are being racist by doing so or set up a society for all races that would keep the peace.

Becuase white people are not a minority. It allows for minorities to befriend each other because obviously everyone in Ireland is racist.

hmmmm...we all know the race issues brought up in ireland and there are immigration issues all tied up in it all, and according to the "mother theresa set" that 'ni chonnail' woman is a racist and all that... but in the grand scheme of things, if it was all reversed, would they treat us any better ??

it all boils down to minorities. you say that 44% of the university are white. that would more or less make them the majority in terms of race.

i'm gonna start a white society in a kenyan university. i think it'll go down well.

Do the respcetive Black and Asian Students societies bar prospective members based on their race (e.g. White)?

Personally I think a White students' society would be superflous given that society in general is white.

because in the past in the past the white devil was seen as racist and they are getting their revenge since 2 wrongs now apparently make a right. It is just like sexism against men is tolerated since in the past it was nearly always the woman hard-done by. Thats why you see women only gyms freely advertised on TV for "real" (the new word for obese) women. Whereas men-only clubs would not be tolerated as much and men only golf clubs are protested against.

You darent say a word or the past will be brought up as defence. Bad thing is the young white male had none of these advantages. Look at young white males in south africa openly discriminated against for jobs.

People are saying it doesnt matter since the whites are the majority. What if it was in a country with another race being the majority? I really don't think a whites only society would be tolerated there as easily as an asian only society in the UK.

Why dont you start the Irish society then? For people who are proud to be Irish to get together, drink irresponsibly and moan about how little most foreigners drink.

Its because we are proud to be Irish, rather than proud to be white. We`re white....alright, so are people from France and Germany who culturally and socially are a billion miles away from us. But we are Irish. Its our country we are proud of, our traditions. Nearly all African countries are artificial post colonial creations, so Id imagine many are more proud of being just plain African than of being Congolese or Rwandan. Likewise in the USA- few if any black people would describe themselves as Nigerian- Americans of Ghanian- Americans, mainly because when their ancestors arrived from these places those countries didnt exist. So African American is just easier.

When I was on Erasmus in a university in France there were two separate soicties for students from Senegal and the Ivory Coast, so I'd imagine that some of their members weren't proud of being "just plain African." I also reckon that those two societies were more about forming groups were you could meet people in similar situations to yourself with similar backgrounds etc than purely a matter of pride.

I know someone else has already suggested this, but I think the OP should try and join one of those societies, and if unsuccessful, why not bring proceedings under the 1976 Race Relations Act, you never know, you may be able to claim a bit of compo to put towards those student debts...

Well that is another good example. I doubt any college in england would have a problem if people did have a Irish people's society. But I don't think an english peoples society would go down as well in an Irish college (I say english/irish peoples rather than english/irish as in the subject). Same thing, that they are wary of the history, like how I hear that some english people always put eire on post to here thinking putting Ireland may cause offence, even though putting eire and posting in england is the exact opposite of what they are meant to do.

i would have used a word other than 'clowns' myself, but unfortunately for everybody the really truly dangerous racists aren't waving flags or adoring that 'painter' fellow anymore, the imagery is too dated and their approach is more subtle, if that is concievable ??
