Does the Amount of Stock Purchased from abroad mean VAT Registration?

If someone is a sole trader and their business entails selling goods (not services) and purchases their stock from outside Ireland, i.e. either from the UK or from other countries *outside* the EU, would this have any bearing on whether they must become VAT registered?

Of course, assuming that the persons annual sales are under the VAT threshold of €51,000, and I believe soon to be rising to €55,000.

    Thanks

Vat Registration is as it says - if your net sales are over 51k then you will have to register for vat regardless where the goods are being delivered to.
