scandisk error?

A friend of mine is having trouble with his PC. It froze earlier, everything stopped working including the mouse etc. He restarted it and a message came up with "scandisk error". Now when he turns it on it just comes up with a black screen with a flashing white cursor in the top left corner. Anyone know what might be…

He can get into the bios ok but thats about it.

Sounds like the hard drive is having problems (or BIOS settings have changed, unlikely. )

boot from a floppy / CD / usb depending on the age of the machine to confirm
