"Microphone Boost" causing interference

I've just set up a headset, and Ive noticed that none of the programs Im running seem to pick up any sound from the microphone unless "Microphone boost" is set on my soundcard settings. (Managed by Creative software although the standard windows Microphone boost box is ticked also).

Has anyone else got this problem? It wouldnt be a big deal, only when you do set Microphone boost to On, the speakers and headset earphones give out an annoying interference noise at anything above 70% volume.

Any tips would be very welcome.

Here's the headset Im using... Sennheiser Headset

    Yeah, I've seen this before.

You have to use the boost, but you also have to turn the microphone volume down too (not the main volume, just the microphone specific volume).

Yet another fantastic feature of XP. So much for my 70 quid headphones leading to a hassle free life lol

you can actually mute the mic rather than just turn it down under playback. This is seperate to the recording so the sound will still record or be used in whatever program the same, just that you don't hear it in the headphones/speakers.
