I am writing a dissertation , and I need to index it, I have tried with word, but it keeps coming up no entries found. Does anyone know how to index a document correctly in Word.

If its stating "no entries found", then you're headings are probably the wrong text style.

Word only recognizes headings for indexes and tables if the words are in a format style based on Heading. By default Heading 1, 2 & 3 are available, so if you restyle your headings with these it should see them.

Other wise I THINK you can select the style that your headings are in such as "Bold 12" or whatever in the style toolbar, open its properties and change its "based on" from whatever it is (prolly "normal") to heading.

    Make sense?

You need to mark entries for the index (unless you are making a table of contents which uses the headings). Goto insert > Index and Tables and then pick the mark index button and pick the index entries. I am pretty sure that is how you do it but I could be wrong. Read something like this or this or this

There is no way to index a book automatically - the only way is to go through the book page by page and index it.

There are plenty of programs out there to do this but they cost a lot of money.

Kool!!!! I searched and I searched for a tool like that before - must test it out - but I know you definitely can't do that with ms word

ok I tested that tool on a book that I was trying to index and it came back with 8200 entries first when I told it the document contains names and 3266 without names all of which I would have to go through - not what I would exactly call automatic. Then plus I don't know what it has left out aswell.
