    Hi

I have an MSI 6600GT AGP and a new Philip 23" HD LCD TV.

Currently connected as VGA (D-Sub) to DVI via a converter.

If I connect the DVI-out to DVI-in directly will I be able to use a HD mode on th e TV?

The documentation for the card is confusing only mentioning HD support via S-Video out.

    TIA

My understanding of how the TV works is this (which I think is correct), the TV has whats called an EDID this holds the information about what resolutions the TV supports on what interface.

So in short you are governed by what the TV is programmed with I don't think a straight DVI-DVI connection will make a difference but there is no harm in trying it.

Now there is another way if you use a utility called Powerstrip you can force custom resolutions not officially supported by the TV but this can be a tricky procedure.

If either of these are your TV the Philips 23 PF9966 or PF8946, it has a max resolution of 1280x768 (720p) so that is as high as you can go.

What does your current setup allow you to run at ?

    Tis a 23PF5320 - running at 1280 x 768 @ 60Hz this is VGA due to the D-Sub.

    Support VGA modes:
    640 x 480 60, 67, 72, 75Hz
    720 x 400 70Hz
    800 x 600 56, 60, 72, 75Hz
    832 x 624 75Hz
    1024 x 768 60, 70, 75Hz
    1280 x 768 60Hz
    Supported Video modes:
    640 x 480i 1Fh
    640 x 480p 2Fh
    720 x 576i 1Fh
    720 x 576p 2Fh
    1280 x 720p 3Fh
    1920 x 1080i 2Fh

Obviously it is running in VGA mode now so my question is really does the DVI connector on the 6600GT provide HD output when connected DVI to DVI?

Or am I missing the boat?

I've connected my fx5200 via VGA->VGA (also used DVD->DVI) and played 720i HD clips through a dell w2600 HDTV...most if not all LCD monitors are HD by their native resolution. Most high end GPUs will output up to and above W/SXGA resolutions via VGA...

Okay to put clearly if you are running at either 1280x768 or 1366x768 with your TV then you are running in HD mode.

DVI/VGA are irrelevant those are just a means of connecting to the display though DVI<->DVI would give a sharper picture as its being converted into analogue with your current setup whereas with DVI is stays digital.

I don't think your display supports 1920 x 1080 though I cant be certain but a Google search says 1366 x 768 is the max supported by your display.
