Why spelling is important

NICOSIA (Reuters) - You might have the best forgery skills in the world, but it is not much use if you cannot spell.

A Cyprus court jailed Pakistani national Fazal Ur Rehman for eight months for forgery after police spotted spelling mistakes on stamps on an Afghan passport he was carrying -- otherwise it was a near-perfect copy, the Cyprus Mail said Wednesday.

"Ministry" was spelled "Menistry" and the first "n" was missing from government, the newspaper said.

"The passport looked perfect and professionally made ... almost deemed original by forensics," a police officer told a magistrate in the Cypriot capital Nicosia.

    LOL!

    Kind of on topic...

I hold my hands up. I'm a spellcop. Before you all beat me with sticks, there are a few mitigating factors. Firstly I'm not talking about an occasional spelling error here and there, because most posts will have those in one form or another, as with grammatical errors. I'm talking about consistent silly mistakes that just scream "I'm with stupid" at the reader. I know there are such things as learning disorders, although I think they are also used as a convenient crutch by some who are too lazy to make the effort. I know some true dyslexics OTOH, who spell and communicate themselves perfectly to the extent that one would never know they had a problem. The point is, *in general* those who cannot communicate coherently, via a text based medium (taking into account one or two exceptions) are not worth the effort of reading in the first place.

Have to agree, my eyes burn when im reading a post and every second word is spelt wrong, i try and read over each of my posts and will even take 10seconds out of my life to edit them if i spot an error.

Preaching to the choir? No, I'd rather bring my mission to the masses.

In one of my old jobs, we'd deal a lot a subsidiary based in Holland in a place in Rotterdam called Pernis.
You can guess what many emails and letters had on it instead thanks to an auto spell check :p

    Hey Roundy,

If the person submitting the post makes a spelling mistake, then shouldn't the above quote read "I am stupid" or do you give them the benefit of the doubt and let them blame a mate?:D

Oi! Don't fiddle with the bait! :p

@ Tar, a fair point. However, anyone sufficiently pro-active to post to the grammar forum in the first place is probably above reproach ;)

Some of the posts one reads on other fora however are more akin to Creative Writing, in that it seems the author is trying to invent a new variation on English...

Strange as it may seem, the Scottish are among the worst offenders in this regard, (blanket statement anyone?). I frequent a good few groups on Usenet, predominantly UK sunscribers, and the b****y Scots insist on posting phonetically, with gems like "aye mon, awa' wi' ye noo, yer talkin' pish, toot toot am oot". <punctuation in the above gem was brought to you by Roundymooney for the sake of clarity>

    Strange.

    Note to RoundyMooney. Spellcheck.:D

That's what I get for typing with my toes. :D

I could use the bait excuse, but that would be a lie, and my nose is long enough :o

Hey spiderlegs. What is the idea of the space as highlighted above?;)

I can't help but think that I am setting myself up for a big fall here tonight.

yeah, we all make spelling mistakes from time to time and our grammar might not be the best, but at least we try. the txtrs piss me off so much that i will reply to any text message sent to me in txt spk with this message: ""please send that message again and use proper words this time".
