Okay, so last night (really the night before) GSP versus BJ Penn took place.

I really wanted GSP to win this one, but I didnt dare hope. I was sure he hadnt yet peaked and that he would beat anyone, but not for another 2 years.

BJ came out with some of the slickest shorts ever. So they go at it and wowwee GSP beats BJ Penn! I was so happy. Anyway, because the UFC fans are sachmos they start booing GSP because he is a french candian. But GSP being a class act, and taking a leaf out of Genki Sudo's book announces that we are all one. And generally gave such a class act performance. He is humble, direct, respectful as well as being an amazing fighter!

THank god more and more fighters are representing an intelligent and respectful attitude.

Now all we need is Arlovski to drop to 205, JLB to win the vacant HW belt and we could have 3 UFC belts belonging to non-Americans. SSIAs? Happy days!

    Peace
    WE ARE ALL ONE!

Put a spoiler warning in future man, I haven't seen it yet!

What a tough man, the first round was a nightmare for him and he still believed in himself enough to impose himself on the fight - brilliant !! I agree that his comments at the end had a touch of class

I thought Penn had a good first round and then seemed to think all he had to do was watch the rest of the fight, but GSP had the guts to go out and win what looked like a disaster for him.

Did you see GSP pick Penn up and slam him - man he should have been dead and buried after the first round, I think that his belief in himself and his courage was sort of inspirational - talk about never say die !!!

i dont think that all the booing peolpe were booing gsp - i think many were voicing their objectuion with the result - and i think that there is an arguemrnt for bj to have won - all gsp did is some takedowns - and if that is the sole criteria for him getting the nod in rd 2 & 3 then could it not be argued that every unsuccessful take down attemp was a score for bj - i see why the bout was given to gsp but it was by no means a clear decision - and under pride rules bj would have won unanimuously - take downs for the sake of take downs with no effective striking, sub attempts etc dont warrant to much imo - dont forget the reception the gsp got comming in - it was as much a reaxction to the judged as it was to the meathead element that the ufc attracts

I think gsp clearly won - although i do think that there should be a clearly defined rule for damage sustained ie. gsp's face was messed up and penn looked like a new born baby....maybe a one point deduction to gsp for damage sustained? dunno - one thing i do know though is that there should be draws in mma, with an additional round to decide the winner, how often do we see controversial decisions? too often!!

To be honest, i found that match to be total and complete proof that GSP has come on so much as a fighter. During the first round the shots that Baby J was landing and the vicious nose break really seemed to take him out of his game but he came back strong man. The second and third round were fierce battles and he did so well!!!

Delighted that he got the victory. :D

GSP won the points but Bj beat the crap out of him and showed him what it was like to fight a world class fighter.

I just don't know why BJ didn't seem to bother with the last two rounds.

I think his time will come eventually. GSP will beat hughes, BJ will beat hughes and then GSP. Hopefully

I thought that was strange as well - he didn't look too tired between rounds, maybe he thought he had already won it.

I don't know if he didn't really try, i just think he thought he was winning, i think it was only AFTER the match where he became unsure he might not have won. Sure, in his after fight talk with Rogan he said "I did more damage" but he was not standing like a man who felt he had been robbed.

All in all, i think GSP deserved the win. He took a beaten and came out stronger. It just makes his victory more impressive in my eyes that he overcame the onset of doubts halfway through the first round.

As for Hughes, i would love to GSP topple him, but there is that difference between a contender and a champ, as shown by Fanklin Vs Louiseau (( sorry, just can't spell his name right for some reason )). I think this fight will simply have made Rush a better fighter and Hughes will really need to take him very seriously.

hmm. what can i say. i'm not certain of pride rules but I think:

bj won the first round, by landing more strikes and causing damage.
gsp got takedowns in round 2 and 3. he looked like he was trying harder. i think bj didn't really mind getting taken down because he knew he'd not get subbed and that he'd get back up. i don't think bj was ever in danger of getting KOed or submitted. GSP looked like he could get KO/TKOed by BJ. However, BJ had no sub attempts, excluding the onoplata in the last few mins. I think the match proved inconclusive.

bj should have been fighting at a lighter weight. not that he isn't strong at this weight, but he's a monster at the lighter ones.

but gsp does deserve a title shot against MH and hopefully bj will fight the winner of that a bit more competitively......

At the end of the day i just didn't see BJ putting in the effort. The damage to the eye was an accidental thumb, and it could be argued that if GSP hadn't received that shot, or asked for a quick time stoppage as he would have been entitled to the uppercut to the nose would not have happened.

Either way, the did but BJ failed to capatilise. I think GSP was a bit more clever than people were giving him credit for, using kicks to hack away at the lead leg of BJ and cut down on the effectivness of that jab, which did fall off during the later rounds.

All in all, they both fought well, and they bought have the obvious potential to beat Hughes, but neither one would have beaten Hughes that night.

The thing about Hughes is he literally does not know how to bring any less than 100% of his game to a fight.

I think it is unfortunate for Hughes because GSP will have learned a lot from this fight and will be all the better for it. All Hughes has between now and then is a walk with Royce.
