THE Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has awarded a multi-million euro contract to construction firm Laing O'Rourke to construct Pier D, part of the new boarding gate facilities at the airport.

It is understood the construction of Pier D will take up a chunk of the €100m plus total budget for the new pier, including all ancillary works and access options to the existing passenger terminal currently under review.

The DAA has also signed a number of other deals on the design, project management and architecture at the airport, following tender processes.

According to the Authority, the contracts are central to the delivery of the second passenger terminal at Dublin Airport and DAA's €1.2bn, 10-year plan for its development.

Pier D will provide 14 new boarding gates for narrow and wide-bodied aircraft by 2007.

Planning permission for the new pier has already been secured, and site preparation work for the 15,000 square metre, two-storey structure will start within the next couple of weeks.

"The Dublin Airport Development Programme is the largest capital investment ever undertaken by the company and in terms of the range of projects deliverable with a very tight timeframe at a working airport, probably one of the most complex in the history of the state," said Declan Collier, chief executive of the DAA.

    Projects

UK-based Laing O'Rourke was formed five years ago through the merger of Irish and British firms. It employs over 23,000 people worldwide.

The company has been involved in a number of other airport projects, including Heathrow's new Terminal 5, as well as projects in Edinburgh and Dubai.

Other contracts have been awarded for the project management, airport architecture and design at the airport.

A consortium comprising Ove Arup, Pascall & Watson and Mace - international design, architecture and project management consultancies respectively - has been appointed.

They will be project managers and designers for Terminal 2, Pier E and all the associated kerbside integration works need to link the new passenger terminal with the existing Terminal 1.

Additional contracts have been secured by Davis Langdon PKS and Turner & Townsend.
