Movie Maker & Home Movies

I have used my DVD RW to put a bunch of home camcorder clips to a DVD. I now want to edit out the bad bits on my PC and was hoping that Movie Maker would do the trick. It is telling me that the files are not in a format it can read. Is there anyway to convert the standard movie format to a format that could be used by Movie Maker?

You'll have to get an Mpeg 2 to WMV converter.

    *edit*

This might be what you're after:

usually I use virtualdub MPEG2 to convert to huffy. Huffy is huge though, but its a good way to go.

You could though it would be a bit messy is copy the vob files of significant size on the DVD over to your PC and rename them from .vob to .mpg then you should be able to import them into WMM.

Alternatively you could merge all the vob files into one big file then use vobmerge to join them together then rename that to movie.mpg and import it.

I don’t really use WMM make someone can confirm this but doesn’t it only output WMV files just in case you have plans for burning this to a DVD again.

Do you own a copy of Nero by any chance as they have the perfect program for you're job called Nero Vision which will import the DVD allow you to edit it, then add a menu and then burn it back to DVD.

Yeah Movie Maker only outputs to WMV (and In my opinion isn't even a very good editing package). It really does depend on what you are planning to do with the footage though BlueSpud

What I want to do is to get the footage into a digital format that (a) I can play on a DVD Player, and (b), into a digital format that will stand the test of time.......

p.s. When I said I used a DVDRW above to make a DVD, it is a Philips DVD Played as distinct from being PC based.
