As far as I know its Sky's way of checking that the skybox is in the address that its supposed to be in. I think they insist on it more when there's 2 or more boxes in the house. I was never hasseled about the phoneline until the second one arrived and then they started sending angry letters.

Basically, the phoneline is to make it easier for the customer to order Box Office movies and sporting events, which in turn, makes more money for Sky.

Also used for Sky's Active service, where certain emailing can be done and voting on Sky News etc. Again, more money for Sky.

With multiroom, the second box is discounted so they need to be able to check that the second box is in the same house. I got multiroom in 6 months ago, pulled the lines, was fine until last week when I received a letter telling me to plug back in th telephone and pointing out the terms and conditions (i.e. if you don't plug it in they can charge full whack for the second box). Not sure that they will do anything if you only have one subscription.

But they certainly will if you have a multiroom (discounted) subscription.

Perhaps you disabled it in Parental control?

No they don't really care except on Mirror subs as that could cost them 45 EUR a month in lost revenue.

Go to Services then press 4, 0, 1, Select. This brings you to the installer menu.

From here go to the Telephone Settings, and make sure there is no Dialing Prefix (unless you need one to dial outside line). Sometimes, it can help to change dialling type from tone to pulse.

The phone line isn't necessary unless ordering films/events. You can get a sky subscription without needing a phone line. You will need to pay an extra €30-40 though.

Yes, that is true, it's known as a NPL (No Phone Line) subscription. The fee is €37.50, which must be paid with either Laser or Credit card.

You used to be able to order manually (phone, mobile, voip etc), i.e. without Digibox on phone line but I think there is a surcharge per event now.

Your SkyCard comes with about €60 worth on it so you can use your remote to order for free up until it reaches the limit whether you're connected to a phone line or not, however once its used, if you connect to a phone line your next bill will include that €60 added to it, and then if disconnected again your card will have another €60 on it. I think even if yuo don't connect to a phone line ever you can ring them and pay what owed on the card and they'll free up another €60 to allow ordering with the remote and without connection.

I'm 99% sure all of the above is correct.

But how could you make an order with your remote without a phone line connected? How would the order get to Sky? Sky's minidish isn't capable of transmitting signals - that's one of the reasons they want you to have a phone line: to communicate the order to Sky in the first palce.

What I'm saying is your card is credited with approx €60 so the transaction doesn't go anywhere, but as soon as you do connect your sky box to a phone line every penny that has been spent on the card is sent via the phone line to sky and you're billed for it. This I know to be fact cos it happened to me. When I first got installed I had no phone line and was still able to order with my remote until its credit ran out. About 6 months later I got a phone installed and got quite a shock on my next sky bill. I have since had the phone line disconnect from my house and was again able to order with the remote until approx €60 was gone. I have since tried to order stuff but get the standard message saying there is insufficient credit on my card and giving a number to call. I'm pretty sure if I ring this number they'll bill me and then top up my card again.

Yeah, that's pretty much true. Though, generally, it won't let you view the PPV event without a phoneline installed.

Usually, when you try to get a PPV, the box checks to make sure line is connected, then allows you to view movie if it thinks line is present. Then, at a later time, it'll callback, and detail Sky with what PPV events you viewed.

There was a scam some time ago offering a phoneline connected to a 9v battery, so the box would think it was connected. This was grand until the credit limit is reached.

I am about to get the multiroom with sky+ installed this week. My question is related kinda, the only reason i got the multiroom was because it subsidised my sky+ and then i have the other box in another room. But I don't really care about the mirror subscription - is it a year i need to wait to cancel the multiroom part of the contract or can i do it sooner? I have a UK FTV card so I will stick that into the multiroom box once i have cancelled.

I think if you tell them the goat ate the phone line, or whatever (lots of reasons) they will just charge for two subscriptions. After all they get more money for the same work.

(If you changed to a VOIP phone supplier the mirror mechanism won't validate anymore).

If you unplug the phone lines they threaten to change you to two separate subscriptions... Accept the threat as a promise.
