They are caused by herpes simplex virus which after the initial infection lies dormant in the nerve roots to re-emerge when the immune system is suppressed such as under stress or when ill.

Initial infection can be very dramatic, even causing a brain infection which can be very serious called herpes encephalitis.

Some people have big problems with them, others hardly notice them. There are treatments available for them including aciclovir such as zovirax which specifically prevent the proteins of the herpes virus working.

As a natural remedy L-Lysine is very effective.

Lysine differs from Aciclovir, it is found naturally in food, but certain people may be deficient in it. Google it for more info.

And on that note, can aciclovir be used to treat genital herpes?

Yes, it works for all herpes species by inhibiting thymidine kinase which is an essential protein for the viral reproduction. It also works for chicken pox and cytomegalovirus but less effectively.
