(i searched and read almost every thread I could)

    Bought the xbox 360 today..

One thing that has bothered me since I bought my original xbox in 2004, was Xbox live. I have Eircom broadband and a cable modem (netopia), and it should connect piece of cake.

I thought nothing of it and played my xbox offline for months, now with the 360, i want to take it online. Connection problems are still here.

Googling the problem brings up boards.ie results, where many people have had the same trouble. They all seem to get it sorted, i've tried all their solutions including the PPPoe method and no luck. Even upgraded my modem firmware, turned off the firewalls, everything.

I am using the ethernet cable that comes with the 360, plugging it into my cable modem, (netopia 3300 or 3346 or something), plugging the phone line and power cable in.

THIS SHOULD SUFFICE. But it doesn't, it gives a cabling error, xbox live can't be found.

When I got my modem, it came with an ethernet cable, said it was ready for xbox live.

    Didn't work.

When I got the 360, it also came with an ethernet cable, that doesn't work.

Whats the difference between the rj-45 and the other?

I'm going to have to call xbox or something, I really want to get online.

Any other information I will supply if you think you can help me out.

    Cheers..

Thats strange, as I also have the netopia modem and xbox. Anytime I want to play online all I do is plug in the ethernet wire into the xbox and into the back of the modem and it works instantly..

Unless you have some of the settings wrong in Xbox Live?

Take the ethernet cable from the back of the pc and put it straight into the xbox, if your pc has no problems then your xbox shouldn't. If nothing else it will eliminate a problem with cables??

I'm having a slightly different problem, but also can't connect to xbox live.

I'm using an Eircom broadband connection with a Netopia router. The broadband connection is fine and the laptop has windows media connect installed and working properly with the xbox 360 as regards playing audio from the PC etc.

The only issue is connecting to xbox Live, the xbox 360 passes all the network tests when I try to connect, however immediately after all the tests pass, it displays the following message:

Update Required: An update is available for your console from xbox live. If you decline this update you will be signed out of xbox live. Do you want to apply the update now?

If I select Yes, then it will say:

Please wait while the update is applied. Do not turn off or unplug your console.

    It then returns an error:

Update Failed: A failure occurred during installation of the update. There may be a problem with your network connection or your storage device may be full. For more info go to www.xbox.com/support

As I said I have no other issues with the network connection, I have tried the cable with the premium package and a spare network cable also and neither will work (tho I doubt the connection problem is physical if the connection can get to a point where it sees the xbox 360 needs an update)..I have nothing else stored on the hard drive so there is no issue with the storage either, I can't see any particular place either to ensure that updates will be downloaded to hard drive by default.

Can anyone offer any ideas on this or has anyone else had similar problems??

I know with some modems they have to be rebooted when used with a new device. From what i can gather they associate with what ever they are first plugged into. so what ya could try is before you plug in your modem to the 360 is power down the modem.

I think the problems lying with the ethernet cable, I need a crossover one instead of a straight through one..

Btw - I appreciate your help all.

Straight through is the right cable, crossover is just for connecting 2 PCs directly.

Oh bollocks. Then I will probably have to get on the phone to xbox/eircom. :\

    OK

    I'M IN!!

I had to set up a new network for my xbox, download a modem firmware update, change the cabling, fiddle with settings for hours, update the 360 and other junk but I finally got LIVE!!

    It's awesome!!!!

I'm downloading a Call of duty demo now, there's loads of free downloadable content, tomorrow I'll hop on ridge racer and play. I have 1 month free Xbox Live Gold subscription with my 360.

My gamertag is 'defunq' if anyone has Live!.

Seems everyone here has sorted out their problems!
