    Hey there, me again. :o

There is a drawer thing on the left side about the size of a credit card, was told it might be for a memory card, is this correct? and, when i have files saved onto a cd and load them onto another computer they come up as read only-why is this? I have tried to disable the read only option but it wont let me. This means I have to make sure there are no errors in documents before i save as i have to use another computer to print.

    Thanx

Unless you are using re-writeable CDs each cd can only be written to once. That means all files written to the disk become read only. So be double check before you commit your documents to CD.

The "drawer" is most likely a PCMCIA Card Slot. It can be used for many things, such as Wi-Fi / Bluetooth / Infra-red / Network plug in cards etc etc. It can be particularly useful if say the onboard network card in your laptop gets damaged and would be un-economical to replace. You can just buy a relatively cheap network card and plug it in.

FG .... you really should have been given a manual of some sort .... I rem in your earlier thread you said you searched your machine but found no mention of any manual ....

Give them a call ... have your model no handy and have them send you a manual or at least a CD with it on .... did you get any CD's with the Laptop? .... if so check them first to see if a manual is on one of them ....

If they are CD-RW then they can be used again.
Check for the mode in which you are writing the cd.
You will usually see a tick box that says something like
"Do you want to leave the session open so that you can append files later".
The wording will vary dependeing on your software.
This mode will allow you to add more files if you wish.
It won't actually change the first file you mentioned but you can save a new corrected copy with a slightly different name.

If you do not do this the cd is effectively locked until you completely re-format it, after which you can use it again. Hope this helps

I got a notebook driver cd but, again, erm... I have no idea what it's for. I contacted iqon before I came here first and scoured their web site and all they said was to ring 'em up. I could be on the phone 24/7 with all the questions i have, most of which require simple answers, hence the need for a guide book,a small one at that. I don't think i'm meant to run to the phone every 5 seconds with a query....am i ??? The only guide i got was for the battery and that was it.

Maybe you are supposed to possess laptop knowledge as soon as you open the box to your new laptop, mine obviously passed me by. Apart from that i LOVE my laptop.

It sounds to me like you need to do a ECDL course, google ECDL Euopean computer driving licence I think. Stop using CDRW, in my experience they're unreliable and a pain to use, get a 1 gig USB keyring thing.
Ok I just looked and a 1 gig keyring flash drive is €70, but they start at €15, what kind of files will you need to save?

I got a notebook driver cd but, again, erm... I have no idea what it's for.

Put it in a very safe place together with all paperwork .... software licences etc etc ..... and hopefully you will never need them (re-install) ...

Normally use floppy disks and new to laptops (no kidding?!). Normally I would just try eveything and see what happens, but you only have to BREATHE over a laptop to activate something or other so it's best to leave well alone until you know what you're doing.

FG, do you know what software your Laptop came with for the CD writer. Some Applications like Nero and Easy CD have specific writing functions that allow you to use the Cd like any other folder or drive. Nero's version is called InCD. When you insert a CD-RW it will ask you do you want to format the disk using InCD and if you do you can use it like any floppy, or hard drive dragging and dropping files but when you go to use on a PC that doesn't have InCD you will only have read only function.

Suggest if you must use dual PC's that you format the disk and create standard Data CD-RW sessions.

The Drawer on the side....are you sure that;s not the PC Card slot? Most new laptops come with a plastic "blank" card to fill the space and i guess it could be described as a credit card drawer :) Wouldn't worry about it unless you have PC card for something like mobile communications.
