thought this would be better off in here than in broadband as it's specifically about routers and not a certain broadband package.

right so, atm i have the Linksys WAG54g (i think that's the model) as you can see it's a 54mbps wireless router which does fine for sharing broadband.

but i find sharing files over the wireless can be a bit of a pain especially in these days of large files >300megs.

i know there's 108mbps routers out there but would it be worth my while getting one or is there anything on the near horizon??

Im probably wrong, but, if the router is 54mbps, and the file is lets say, 540mbs, wont it take 10 seconds to transfer? Or does it only use a certain "amout" of the connection, like 1mb broadband, only downloading between 125-115kbps maxed out?

it's megabit or gigabit not megabyte and gigabyte..massive difference
    8 bits =1 byte
    1000 bytes= 1kb*
    1000kb=1 megabyte*
    1000 megabytes=1 gigabyte*

    *roughly

    Something like this?

Remember you'd have to change your NICs too, so something like this.

I have had that router a while, but never actually tried the 108mbps feature yet: I will be in the next week though

If you are buying a new router, it would probably make sense to get a new MIMO one, the range should be superior and the speed probably better as well.

the 54Mb\s is a raw transfer speed and does not take into account:

    1) Interferance\weak signal
    2) Network\protocol overhead (about 40%)
    3) Overhead used for encryption, which also adds to the workload.
    4) The fact that this banwidth is shared between the clients on the AP

You would be doing well to get 30Mb/s of raw, usable transfer with 54Mb/s WLAN.

The jury is still out on 108Mb\s tech, you can be sure it is nowhere near CAT 5 ethernet even on a bad day.
